Absolutely not true! Most bells are just plain crap,

A proper bell is the ORIGINAL Spur (read - not counterfeit), or the Spez brass bell for a third of the Spur's price. I have both, and imho, the Spur is worth every cent; design, manufacturing quality, and sound.

A bell is a polite way to warn hikers of you approaching, or when approaching blind corners, apart from when you would like to pass a fellow cyclist.

Hi.

I want/need a good bell on my bike to shoo people out the way when on a public path  :w00t:

Scubes, if you're after something that chunky and works, the Spurbell( or the Rockbros  ) will work for you... but if you'd like something more discreet.......that works...

check out the Oi.. I picked up a couple yesterday, they're really neat.

I saw a spiffy looking bel advertused on Westrand cycles fb page.

decided for yourself...

here're some clips on comparisons

(the Spurcycle should resonate enough to only have to ding once a ride  :P )

man that bell rocks,,,puts my free PPa bell into another category.

so were talking shared  walking, running, hiking paths....and calling or talking just doesn't work on all in front of you .Older folks with hearing loss don't hear voice .. warnings they need the bell.Joggers with earphones don't hear voice.

I get thanked on almost every ride by the walkers and hikers for dinging my bell.I usually ring and shout ice cream, ice cream....i'm even getting ice cream requests when i dont ring.

Where did you get the Oi bell?

The Knog Oi looks great. The price is ok (cheaper than what the SpurCycle Bell was last year!) Spur was R650 in black in OCT 2016 now is R900 and the Rand has gotten stronger! Go figure....

Knog also looks really cool and minimalistic and will fit on the bar with the dropper remote and fork remote and still have space for a light when needed and gps too.

But- the reviews I read online re the Knog are really bad- the spring is weak and the striker is plastic- so the sound is very soft and cannot be heard- what is your experience of this?

Also apparently the Oi is for road bikes. On the MTB trail the constant bumps rattle the Oi - rattles the weak plastic striker spring so the Oi always goes bing bing bing which would drive me nuts totally.

The overseas reviews rate the overpriced SpurBell as way better than the Oi in terms of materials quality and function.

I don't want a knock off and it has nothing to do with copycatting, I just know the quality will suffer and I will regret it when I throw the thing away after a while.

There is the Timber bell strictly for MTB and it rattles while on and is silent when off- the trail bumps activate it. Haven't seen that anywhere in SA though yet. It also looks a bit odd too, like a mini horn of sorts.

So the SpurBell is the one to get in SA. I need black and I just will not pay R900 for a blady bell!

mmmmm

I'm going to have to let you know ...The whole reason I haven't had a bell on most bike is because of this "bing bing bing'ing" while riding... thought the Oi wouldn't do this..

I'll have to let you know once I've been for a ride

why do you have a bell on a road bike ?

to warn the pedestrians walking in the road? its not like its any good for cars

its more fun to shout STTTTRRAAAVVVVAAA at other roadies so it cant be for them  ^_^

Is it wrong to whistle? Free, never needs cleaning and takes up no space on the bar. Bonus is mine is variable from friendly, to " get the f*** out of the road you idiot" loud.

But for cyclists I find a friendly " I'll pass on your right when I get a chance " has done me proud out on the trails.

R 900.00 for a bell? !!!! Must be a hipster thing.

maybe its just me but i feel like a dick having to ring my bell (at least on any commutes on shared footpaths/roads)... in any case half the pedestrians don't respond or deliberately ignore it. i really wonder whats going on in their heads... "what's that strange bell sound that keeps going off behind me? ah sure its nothing important so i'll ignore it and keep blocking the way"

i saw and liked the timber mtb bell online but was pricey and couldn't get it easily locally... i was actually looking for a london bike courier type bell that hangs off the saddle. basically a bike version of a cow bell that constantly goes off... but couldn't find one anywhere

I come up behind pedestrians and ring my bell from a distance.

They all look on the ground behind them thinking that they dropped money or something
