Its very sad, they're beautiful bikes, and 6 years ago there were quite a few about.

The fact that this question must be asked is probably the saddest post on the hub today!

Massive fail for a great bike!

Obviously SA isn't a big market for the Canadian brand but they failed to keep an eye on how the brand was being run locally and how quickly 'they' found out that maintaining a brand needs a good network of retailers to sell, service and support the customers investing in the brand.

Real pity.

Rock Mountain make some of the best bikes in the world, their technology is rated in the top three (not in order but - Specialized, Rocky and Trek) The company is showing growth in most parts of the world. The only market that it shrunk was in South Africa. The 999 was rated in 2015 as one of the fastest XC ever made.

The past local agent "owner" really did a great job at messing up the brand, Hullabalo did not provide service and over loaded the prices.

If you have ever ridden Rocky - it's really a magnificent bike in many ways there frames are one of the best.  We can only hope a new agent will take this over and do a better work. There is so much opportunity for this brand in SA.

WOW (sarcasm) This Way Out are offering 10% discount on the end of season sale for Rocky Mountain. The Element models are 2019 bikes. In Nov'18 I was sent the price list and the A30 was R45K & the C70 R79K. They're now listed before @ R42.5K & R87.5K ( before the 10% discount) Fairly high prices for a 2019 model. In May last year they had them on sale with 20% off.

Whats even more insane is that the 2021 models are now out. In 2020 the Alloy elements were discontinued.

Wait wut? ... top three how, and who did this "rating" ?

"Best" is an entirely relative and subjective term.

If we look at the top tier brands globally we're looking at, in no particular order; Specialized, Scott, Trek, Cannondale, Giant and Merida as the biggest players.

Much of RM's growth has been in the Pan American region. SA doesn't seem to take to Canadian brands, Cervelo for example. Although Norco seems stable within Cycles United.

Hullabaloo arguably may not have done the brand justice, but they did plough a boat load of capital into the brand, along with other brand items.

It would be a brave move to re-enter a market such as South Africa, especially with a niche/boutique brand that many local riders don't have a connection with in an entrenched market.

As it is we're a brand diverse market, overly so. A market that is competing for share space that has contracted at the mid to mid high end. The bike boom has been on kids and entry level bikes.

Have ridden a few RM bikes, they're great. But as far as opportunity goes, not sure what kind of expectation can be balanced against the investment though.

I'm not a grammar nazi but it seems you were in a queue at Tops this morning :P

RM clearly were very early adopters of new technologies.

Not many late-sleepers would end up with a lekker URL like theirs - Bikes.com. I think it says it all.

If we go back in time, RM were making some seriously progressive mountain bikes, that could and did win races.

EDIT: I always lusted over the ETSX frames, and very nearly managed to lay my hands on one that was for sale at Williams Bike Shop, unfortunately this was sold before I got the cash together to buy it.

The Rocky Mountain brand has never been strong in SA. It has unfortunately bounced around relatively small players that did not have the capitol to invest in stock. Hullabaloo probably made the best go of it and were fortunate in the beginning of their tenure to ride the back of the MTB growth in Sa and around the world. When SA hit the ZAR downturn of 2016 Hullabaloo was just one of the casualties.

Northwave, Rocky Mountain, were just two of the brands that suffered.

I seem to recall they picked up brands from the original BikeHut owners. That wa a messy situation where the Bikehut was sold to a father and son and they were sold a lemon (the debt wasn't disclosed truthfully is the info I have )

another brand we don't have easy access to is Intense.
