Terrible news, nearly rode there this morning but decided to drive out to the cradle as the wife wanted to ride as well.

Once again cyclist taken out on a road with a wide yellow shoulder.

RIP!

This morning on my commute to work. Three cyclist passed me running a red light while I was waiting. Two of the three weren't wearing helmets and all three lacked a red tail light!

If we are going to stay alive we have to do our part!

Another case of the few giving the many a bad rep!

I just don't understand why law enforcement are not making use of the available cellphone technology to assist in tracking down hit-and-run drivers ??  It's available, to a limited degree and cost, to the public. Law enforcement have much more latitude to use this technology, but I question whether they really do ??

I've raised this matter previously with regards to the recent fatal hit-and-run on Andrew Bradford - ( https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/165774-cyclist-down/page-13?do=findComment&comment=3051903 https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/165774-cyclist-down/page-12#entry3051807 )

When smart people in law enforcement start applying their minds (think "Saxonwold Shebeen" here ;) ) and start using this technology then hit-and-run drivers won't get away so easily.

Because it's expensive and the gap in the budget for another expenditure is non-existent.

And before you may argue that it's not expensive, take into consideration the following:

  • Training
  • Implementation(which will incl. programmers and developers, hardware for servers to process/analyze data etc.)
  • Lawyer fees to ensure everything is done legally.
  • Maintenance on said system

Also consent from various service providers and cellphone manufacturers will need to be obtained. Another lawyer fee.

It's sad that loss of life is less than money, but this is the world we live in unfortunately.

I agree that this carries a cost, and there are companies in SA that provide this service within the confines of the law, but law enforcement would use the Section 205 subpoena process available to them. Once served with a Section 205 order, cellphone companies have to hand over the requested information.

Looks like a commuter type bike wheel. Nevertheless, very much rest in peace fellow peddler.

On another note, this specific stretch has been notorious over the last few years. Not just for cyclists deaths, either. Surely they can set up a strict slower speed limit on that bend to avoid this kind of thing happening? Far too much speeding and cutting of corners takes place. Otherwise, this will just continue.
