Same can be said for Aventador drivers... most are old fat men that can't go around corner as fast as a JHB taxi driver.... but they still buy them.

Hahah too true. Come to Camps Bay on a sunny morning and the sports car poser brigade are out in force. From what i could see they trundle down the hill, park, eat and trundle back up the hill. Its a bit like the dog being taken for a walk...

Not if you are trying to make it light and safe. The level of engineering is as high, if not higher - the margin of error is so much tighter on the bike, where grams count, not kilograms.

Sorry, this argument is seriously flawed. The engineering, R & D, amount of materials, transport etc etc. on a bakkie is way higher than any bicycle.

A tyre for that bakkie will cost about R 1800.00 fitted The bike tyre? Bicycle manufacturers tear the ring out of their customers, simple.

This is a 2014 Ferrari LaFerrari.

It can do 0-60mph in 2.6 seconds

It costs $1,500,000

This is a 2015 Nissan GT-R Nismo

It can do 0-60mph in 2.7 seconds

It costs $105,000

First off: Datsun vs. Ferrari.

Secondly, you need to look further along the tach:

LaFerrari: 0-200kph: 6.9s

GTR: 0-200kph: 10.6s

That is what your dosh gets you.

But I agree fully with the rest of your post.

We're to be blamed for this overpriced mess we find ourselves in.

Because we're stupid

I'll pour this man a Bell's, well said Sir!

You forgetting LaFerrari is a pantydropper of note. You don't get that for free...

When you drive a tata, and then you drive a higher end German car (BMW, Golf, Merc), will you not notice the difference?

Now go ride a Raleigh from Makro and then a Scalpel and tell me what you think

So there's a 36 X price difference, will it make me a 36 X better rider? Doubt it.

there is one small difference between the Nissan and the Ferrari if you buy the Ferrari you cannot do the short sides long at the back hairstyle - so for that reason I will NOT buy the Ferrari

Dropping the panties of gold diggers, casting the shadow of envy.... burning massive amounts of fossil fuel, unable to drive the car properly on SA roads and basically just showing that you are rich, want everyone to know you are rich and excess is cool.

I understand taking one to the track, but driving something like that around town just highlites how status and douchism are still ogled over.

It's a weird thing.

If you own a La Ferrari, you can do anything.

Ok so lets start with the OP's car analogy. To do something like the Epic in cycling terms is like doing the Dakar in bakkie terms. The Scalpel you refer to is the same version that the Pro's have access to, so the bakkie you need to refer to needs to be the Hilux Geniel de Villiers got for the race, not a second-hand ranger.

This is incidentally the reason golf bats are so expensive. If you want the ones that Ernie, Goosen or Spieth are swinging, there is a premium. Admittedly you can pick up the second best Scalpel for around R120 000 and you will finish the Epic in just about the same time, but some people want the best and are willing to pay for it.

The thing is, the golf bats the top pro's swing are really difficult to use properly, so a weekend golfer would 99.9% of the time be better off buying way more forgiving clubs.

Much like most of the 'racers' doing Epic probably don't need a top end 'race' machine with super light racey parts. They need something comfortable, stable and reliable.

It all comes down to demand and to a massive degree, ego.

No one who is paying for a bike NEEDS a 180 000 rand bike. So, the answer is still no. A bicycle is not WORTH 180 000 zar. No way.

Some people just like to 'have the best' even when 'the best' is not actually what is best for them

Perhaps my example isn't a fair metaphor but it illustrates my point perfectly.

We are willing to pay so much more for minimal gains. Gains most of us I might ad will never really benefit from. But we want it. We convince ourselves its money well spent.

Naturally we justify this type of spending with:

'My XTR cranks are so much stiffer than, bla bla, bla...'

SHUT UP. Are you Loic Bruni? No? Then stop talking ***.

Wanna know whats happening in the cycling industry R&D?

Imagine for a moment if motor industry declared all 4 cylinder engines as obsolete and therefore only manufacture v6 twin turbos and better because that's what sells and that's what people want.

We're to be blamed for this overpriced mess we find ourselves in.

Because we're stupid

If any of this seems familiar its because I said it here

a year ago when the same topic was raised...

I'll take the GTR thanks

Done a few laps at Nurburg Ring in a few and they are awesome machines.
