until one day you have to walk then we'll talk again.

no, I don't own a Tata.

Read this in a Car magazine few years back:

"Nothing says 'I'm poor' quite like driving a Tata".

You don't have to be poor to say that, but then atleast you're not a hypocrite... :whistling:

With human powered devices, there is a very clear point of diminishing returns as you climb up the pricing ladder.

A Lamborghini Aventador can justify its price on the basis of a number of factors, but most importantly is its performance. It has an objective level of performance that you buy. A bicycle doesn't have that.

With high-end bikes, you pay for the exclusivity of the bike, its components, and the perceived performance feel. Generally, there will be an objective performance gap between a R10k XC bike and a R100k XC bike, but less so if you compare that same R100k XC bike with a R160k XC bike.

The major difference is that the rider is the engine on the bike. If the after market engine is heavy and lacks power, that expensive bike is going to go very slowly. After a certain point, its all about the rider, really.

Same can be said for Aventador drivers... most are old fat men that can't go around corner as fast as a JHB taxi driver.... but they still buy them.

You're right. I exaggerate. I'd rather ride my bike though...

To add to my previous post.

Having bought a new bike last week I was very up to speed with bike prices.  As we did do some trips I noticed the various "toys" ....

Brand new Ranger towing a top notch 4x4 camper-trailer ....

many jet-ski's out at Gordon's Bay ....

and the guy strapping a bike carrier to the hatch of his Porche Cayenne certainly wont put an entry level bike on that rack ....

There are many more expensive ways to spend your money .... at least with a bike there is the potential for it to be a more healthy option.

This is a 2014 Ferrari LaFerrari.
It can do 0-60mph in 2.6 seconds
It costs $1,500,000

This is a 2015 Nissan GT-R Nismo
It can do 0-60mph in 2.7 seconds
It costs $105,000

Perhaps my example isn't a fair metaphor but it illustrates my point perfectly.
We are willing to pay so much more for minimal gains. Gains most of us I might ad will never really benefit from. But we want it. We convince ourselves its money well spent.

Naturally we justify this type of spending with:
'My XTR cranks are so much stiffer than, bla bla, bla...'
SHUT UP. Are you Loic Bruni? No? Then stop talking ***.

Wanna know whats happening in the cycling industry R&D?
Imagine for a moment if motor industry declared all 4 cylinder engines as obsolete and therefore only manufacture v6 twin turbos and better because that's what sells and that's what people want.

We're to be blamed for this overpriced mess we find ourselves in.
Because we're stupid

If any of this seems familiar its because I said it here

a year ago when the same topic was raised...
