Rode the first Trans Karoo 247km mtb and paid just over R 500. A few years later now R 1 800 for a one day ride, oh and if a PPA member R 1 500.00.

...... Is it me or are race organisers loosing the plot

Things have gotten more expensive and the admin around hosting an event has gotten larger, health and safety etc.

Seen this personally, used to be a few porta loo's and at a school hall, now health and safety does not allow that if more than 300 people plan attending, need approved emergency plans etc.

Back in the D, you could rustle up a ride pretty cheaply, now its a bit more expensive.

Cycling clubs should start organizing local club races cheap-cheap, or even for free.

And then 40 guys rock up for the small race and the admin that went into hosting the event goes to waste.

We're all happy to say races are too expensive or the calendar is too sparse, but when it comes to supporting small up and coming races or heaven forbid, doing the leg work to arrange one, suddenly everyone needs to spend the weekend with their wife...you know...spouse aggro.

Something like the houw hoek tour at 800 rand per rider attracts 1000 riders - that's a lot of money. I would love to see the financials for an event like that.

At this stage you need to buy one experience ( event) at a time , do one that suites your budget and move along . Closer to home are the cheapest and most affordable and slowly work your way around the country. My 2 cents ......

Like the gravel express, from van Galen to the shebeen and back over breedts nek@ R290.

Not expensive but a ride you can do every weekend for free with a few mates or find someone along the way?

For what it's worth, there also used to also be R10 000 prize money at Trans Karoo. It was quite well advertised. Not sure if there is prize money now, doesn't seem to be so.

many of these rides are outside of my budget ....

that said, RESPECT to those working so hard behind the scenes to offer us these stunning experiences !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By virtue of my work I rub shoulders with the authorities that have to inspect venues and give approval before these types of functions goes ahead ... I have seen the frantic efforts to meet modern regulations .....

Well done, and well deserved, to those that have figured out how to make an income out of this.  Certainly aint "easy" money.

THANKS to those working so hard behind the scenes.

We will be supporting one of the rides this weekend - 300km round trip to do a short ride, meals for three, entry fees, etc etc .... experiencing this with the little one : PRICELESS

My club spends just over a bar on one major race, and we do it for free. ALL proceeds go to charities through our Rotarian partners.

That race aside, we're also organising a winter crit series with two other "partners" (6-7 races)... June, July and August.
