By way of comparison, the climb in the To Hell and Back where you turn right off the tar road to the top of the Swartberg:

14.1km, 857m, 6% gradient

It becomes steeper during the last 4km, but rideable. Maybe because there is only 5km on the legs when you start climbing!

Just saw the above post. That explains it

First time I went up there the last 5km took me about 1h15 at an average of just over 4km/h. Nothing breaks the spirit like walking for what feels like ages and looking down at your Garmin to see you haven't progressed 1km further. Also a number of times you think(wishful thinking) you are now cresting only to see the road snaking up further ahead.

Something else that makes this climb so different is that you can literally see it from miles away as you approach the mountains, you have loads of time to contemplate the dread.. You look at the escarpment and know there is literally just one way up there and it is (more or less) straight up the mountain

Is that what it is?That's not too bad....ok forget the 150 extra kays on the Ouberg.

True what Skubarra says.

Get your head right and the body will follow is what I say everytime I see a bend in a climb.

This is what I found on Strava

https://www.strava.com/segments/1312192

Ignore the first 8km, they don't count and remove the last 500m of the segment as you go downhill on the other side and see what you have got. :cursing:

You end up with 717m over 6.9 km vertical ascent (so over 10% ave for the last 7km) BUT there are a few bumps you cannot see because of the scale. I have just looked at my ride on Strava and if you look just after the notch (around 10km into the climb you posted) you will find the next km runs between a gentle 15.8 and a bracing 25.5 %. There are also shorter, steeper pieces than that to challenge anyone on a 40-34 on their 1x11

Edit:

I have just compared myself against the KOM.

He took 13 minutes off me in the first 8 km and 48 minutes in the next 7 km when the climb really started....

man oh man, I really want to put my money where my mouth is and just get there for this one!

But i notice now that there is something included in the entry fee that makes it even more heartbreaking not being there.

Why has there been no talk of this? Come now people, this is not like fight club!

By the looks of those Strava stats it may appear that the 9th of October is going to be an eventful and interesting afternoon.????????

My biggest fear is the wind, you can take any challenging route and wind will turn it into a nightmare.

  • 2 weeks later...
  • 1 month later...

Day 1 was brutal, with strong headwinds, loose sand and corrugation. Walked most of the time up Oubergpas. Road into Sutherland with a few drops of rain and icy cold temperatures. 15 hours in the saddle on the day, gravel bikes not as comfortable as a mtb, ouch eina blixem...

What Stan posted to the WhatsApp group:

Hi all. Wow, what a super tough day. The wind, that climb!

I’m sure you all visited some dark places today - I know I did. For all those who made it in, congratulations! Well done on taming the Tankwa beast. And a very special congratulations to our top 3 for today : Charles Keey did it in 09:03:49! Darren Lill and Raoul de Jongh came in 50 minutes later 09:53:59.
