Good morning guys

As a complete rookie when it comes to longer distance rides, what can be done as preparation for the CC, the road ride.

So far my limits are:

1) Longest race: 55km

2) Longest ride: around 65km

3) Weekly rides at the moment: every Saturday a 40km MTB ride.

I just started with hill training to build a bit of strength. I have a stretch of about 800m with about 50m of elevation gain which I ride up and down 3 times a week. This week I did on average 5 runs up and down, putting me at 8km per evening with 250m climb in total.

They have training programs on the website from what I recall. If not there, you can follow the Amashova ones, I know those are definitely on their website.

Ride as much as you can for as long as  you can, simple as that. It's about building stamina.

Depends on what you want to achieve ie, sub-3, sub-4, sub-5 hours?

And I am not an expert, just giving some pointers here...

You mention longest rides and races, are these on road, or MTB bike and on tar or off road?

MTB off-road works the legs more than normal road / MTB bike on tar.

If you do mainly MTB rides and off-road, then ramp it up to 60-80 per ride / per weekend (maybe twice a month, or even every weekend if possible).

If you do some training rides on road bike, then try a few 100km's rides to get you past the distance of the actual race to test your limits...you can even do a few 120km's rides if you can / have the extra time.

In terms of HILLS, the 94.7 race has +/- 1400mtrs of climbing (maybe someone can correct me here?), so hills are VERY important training grounds...especially the last 20-23km's of the actual race is a KILLER!!!!

Once again it depends on what you want to achieve time wise?

I am not sure if you can still train on the actual Kayalami race track (in your area)?

Try to get closer to 1000-1200mtr's climbing per ride AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH, or twice...or even 1400mtr's if possible (wherever you ride).

The more you ride, the better you will get and the more prepared you will be...even if you can not get to those big hill training, or longer distances...just keep at it on the saddle.

Or if you can pop out to Suikerbosrand Reserve once, or twice a month...you will thank yourself for doing that before 94.7

Like I said...I'm not an expert, just some advise from my side   good luck and enjoy the ride on 19 November and remember to take in the vibe along the way!!!

Thanx for the pointers guys.

I'm in a charity bunch with a bunch of friends so the race is more of a ride. Sub 2 weeks I reckon is close to reality.

All my riding is MTB (mostly single track), even the hill near my house I ride on the pedestrian path carved into the grass next to the road.

I'll have a look into Suikerbos.

As for Kyalami, closed to cyclists. You have to book the track out for the day to go ride it

My head is going to be bitten off for sure for this....

But I believe if you consistently do shorter intense sessions in the week along with a medium length ride on the weekend you will be much better prepared than someone who only does very long rides on the weekend.

Try to do 2 or 3 sessions in your work week, about 30mins of intense riding and then something around 60mins or more on the weekend. If you can do that consistently between now and the start of 947 you will be perfectly prepped for the ride with your buds in the charity group.

Those last 23km is gonna hurt either way  , to quote Eddie, "you just go faster"

Suikerbosrand will quickly sort things out for you.

Do some short midweek sessions, get some longer weekend rides in and then go conquer Suikerbosrand and you will get a feel for overall form and fitness.

Many tears been shed there by those who thought...

I would recommend also doing a 100km+ ride every now and then - like every 2nd week. This will give you a feel for the distance and the time you will be spending in the saddle - this is so you also don't underestimate the effort and cramp up due to being ill prepared.

It also helps figure out how to feed your body. Take some gels and maybe banana and what you eat typically. and see what works. The worst thing is to not eat correct on the day and bonk out or malnourish. Call it a dress rehearsal...

I personally use form at Shova and R4V and Carnival City for indicator of form.

Typically a sub 4hr Amashova will mean a sub 4hr 947 - so use some other races to get used to it and have some fun - its what its about afterall.

Training starting this weekend.

+-10 weeks of solid training should do the trick

Double Lap is the plan

Just entered as well. My ride tomorrow will be the first after I fell on the Fast One. Mixed emotions!

When I wrote final Exams in November two years ago, I didnt ride for almost the entire month (Fear of falling off)

Finished exams on Tuesday and was on the wattbike for an hour and a half on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and did a sub 3:30 on Sunday (94.7).

So you'll be fine I rate if you starting now
