it also allows you to pull up next to your best mate and comment that "Ag shame, you only ride a 32t chainring" while you rocking a 36t

you might have to file away at your drive-side stays for a 1x38t chain ring to work unfortunately.

That's the thing. You've got to make sure you've got enough clearance to run such a big ring. Just imagine buying the whole grouppo to realise you can't run anything bigger than a 34T.

All I'd like to know is where are these trails where you need a 36/38T upfront? I start spinning out at 44km/h with 30T - on any trail that is getting pretty fast, like a few kph slower than the speeds the pros get on straight dh speed traps. Last weekend at Fort bill was ~55km/h.

For Enduro it makes sense - one ring with a chain guide and a wide gearing range.

I also prefer gripshift to trigger and the shifting feel of sram over shimano for mtb - will look at this for my next build.

However, I dont see a big benefit of 1x over 2x10 for marathon riders, other than looking more like a pro (look is largely negated with a 30t or 32t anyway)

GX1 cassette is 150g heavier than 10s cassette, vs 130g for a GX fd and 120g for the shifter, 40g for the chainring. Total weight saving about 140g, then. Unless you fit a 170g chain guide....

Seems you can get a GX eagle upgrade kit from bikediscount.de for R5.5k ex shipping and duties.

That is for rd,shifter, cassette and chain.

awesome considering you pay nearly 2.5K locally for an 11spd GX cassette

There was rumour that you could pre order the upgrade here for around the R6.5K mark.

That would be seriously awesome. Im considering saving the shipping and getting one brought out with a colleague coming back to SA next week.

Was tossing up the same thing as well. Let me know what price you find out there.

Will do, still browsing around the various retailers to see who has the best deal.
