New wheels - loose cassette, tight hub

Plunked down for a new wheels on Hope 4 hubs for my Jeffsy. Was excited to give them a spin (even at 10pm at night). So taped them up, installed tyres and sealant (Flow 3 wheels seal nicely).

When I put the cassette on (Sunrace 10sp), it was loose even though the lockring was tight - it wobbles side to side and the 2nd and 3rd smallest cogs are visibly loose. Took the spacer off the old wheel and re-installed.... better, but still wobbles and one cog still loose. This despite being assured that no spacer was required  :cursing:

mmm.... So installed the wheel and tightened up the axle... spin the cranks (bike on stand) and the freehub it TIGHT.... turn the wheel and the cranks turn. Back the axle off and it spins OK, but axle is too loose. :cursing:  :cursing:  :cursing:

So while the whole lot's going back tomorrow, I'd like to know if there's anything that anyone knows that can explain my malaise. I'll report back here tomorrow if anything positive happens

WRT to the cassette wobble, I had the same issue with my new Sunrace 10spd, completely forgot to fit the spacer behind cassette, the thing was so thin i hardly noticed it, anyway problem resolved. Is there any possibility you are missing a spacer in betweent the cogs?

Ja I had the same. Spacer in - problem gone.

There is a plastic cover/spacer/ring on the freehub which protects the pawls etc.

Black on Pro 2 and Green on Pro 4.

Take the freehub off and flip the spacer around and then check if the hub still spins tight.

I once serviced my freehub and accidentally installed the ring the wrong way around which caused the freehub not to spin properly.

As for the loose cassette and cogs, no clue..

ALLMTB is also on to something.

If the seal ring isn't 'clicked' into place properly the free hub will stick.

The spacer for the cassette is probably also important but the 'fixie' action you have going on there sounds like the seal ring being on but not in place

^^This. It's a little green washer / seal thing that sits between the freebody and the pawls. Needs to be teased into a channel on the hub body, otherwise there's a bit of float on the freehub (you'll be able to push the freehub and it'll feel squishy - wil move about 2mm inboard and then return, like it's on a lazy spring)

Pop that in to the channel (can only do this with the cassette off) and reinstall the cassette with the spacers.

The freehub seal may not be seated properly, or the spacer between the hub and freehub bearings may be missing.

Wobbly cassette means you're missing a spacer.

I used the spacer off the old wheel, and while it improved things, it wasn't 100s - cassette still loose. Not sure if there's a DIFFERENT spacer I need. I was assured at the store that no spacer at all was needed so not sure what that's all about. FWIW, the cassette on the previous wheel worked 100s with the spacer

I'll take it all apart again and check the seal. This may solve the issue of a tight wheel but the wobbly cassette warrants a trek back to Durbanville.

Also recently bought a set of Stans Arch wheels on Hope hubs from CWC. DIdn't come with any spacers, so I had to use an old one to get rid of the cassette play. Seems to work just fine. Think it was 2mm, but could be 1.85mm.

Sounds like you need a new XT 11 speed groupset to me.. Do not bother with this spacer nonsense.

Mind if I PM you my banking details? Not keen on putting them in the public eye (one can hope)
