Eating chains for breakfast?

Use a quick link and take the chain off to soak and clean in paraffin, best way as paraffin evaporates and leaves a slightly oily film behind which also helps wicking the fresh lube in.

Parafin can also be reused over and over, just have a dirty and clean Parafin container, first soak the chain in the dirty then rinse off in the clean.

this interesting...most people are talking about how they clean the chain or dont...are there not other factors which should also be taken into account.

quality of chain...i buy cheap get little mileage...as indicated by others buy dura you get over 20 000 km

rider weight...rider weight indicated on this forum range from 65 - XXXL

style of riding...do you grind or spin.

how you maintain your chain...frequent wash or not.

how we determine the chain requires replacement...a jumping chain...a measuring tools or the chain snaps.

Are "harder" chains not going to last longer but also do more damage to your cassette? I would rather replace a chain than a cassette

???? Cross chain????

small front and small back or big front and big back. So basically the chain is not nice and straight.

But the other answers above are a lot funnier than mine, Just thought I would help you out.

Indicated by what others?

I have a Dura Ace clad road bike - 7900 series. I rode 21,000km on ONE chain, ONE set of chain rings and ONE cassette. Not a single skip, jump or problem.

Nooooo. Is this a Friday question or are you being serious?

I ride a 3 x 9 and get my chains from Kiwi.

First thing I do is boil the chain to get rid of the packaging grease.

Lube the pins only with normal engine oil, spin the chain occasionally, wipe off lightly.

After every three or so long rides I remove the chain, boil, wipe dry and put it in an ultrasonic cleaner. Soak in paraffin overnight (this adds a lekker film to the chain)and hang out to dry. Refit and lube the pins ONLY with engine oil and the residual paraffin seems to absorb the oil much better, wipe dry after a period.

I only replace a chain when it slips.

OCD? Yes. Time on my hands, yes.

Chain checker - what a waste.

Works for me and after 12000kms I am still smiling.

Out of interest sake, does a cheaper chain wear out faster than a top of the range chain? From what I've heard is that cheaper chains are made from harder material and therefore lasts longer where as a dura ace chain for example weighs less but is manufactured from 'softer' materials and therefore wears out quicker? This is what a LBS told me.

Well, after today's NF ride there's no way I can't issue the full cleaning treatment. There were some serious swamp sections due to irrigation runoff and my bike reminds me of that 'worst toilet in Scotland' scene from Trainspotting.

Grinding paste 101...
