I will be taking a box like this.

Am i allowed to put extra items (Floor pump, Bike tools , kit, etc) in the box ?

Anything else i should know when packing my 29r in the box ?

SAA as long as it is under 23kg it is fine.

Also put stuff in there but make sure it it tied down so it doesn't scratch bike rolling around and doesn't fall out when they break the handle holes(which they will)

You'll pay extra for the bike obviously, regardless of whether it's your ONLY piece of luggage and is within the weight limit.

If you put extra stuff in the box and it's not specifically cycling related, and they ask you what is in the box, tell them it's a bicycle.

A friend added random stuff and when asked, said so. They then informed him the extra charge was for bike stuff and that was the only stuff allowed in the bike box. He was under the weight limit and they actually made him unpack his bags and move cycling related clothing, helmet shoes etc from his normal luggage into the bike box and vice versa.

LOVE airline companies, don't you?

29érs roll over obstacles better, so you need to put bigger wheel chocks in the box when packing ..

They pack the same as any other bike

According to the above link you don't pay extra.

While we go out of our way to encourage your healthy lifestyle and sporting adventures, charges on sports equipment may apply on both international and domestic flights.

Sports equipment which can travel free of charge is listed below as long as the additional piece of baggage weighs no more than 23kg with a maximum dimension of 200cm. Canoes, windsurfers, hang-gliders, kayaks and sporting equipment larger than 200 cm will be accepted strictly as cargo and the relevant Cargo rates will apply.

Not sure what they mean by a maximum dimension of 200cm though? surely it should say 200x???x???

200cm is the L+W+D (sometimes 2D). common way to measure luggage dimensions.

When I flew my bike to Kenya (wasn't SAA so I was charged), but I put my helmet, tools, pump, shoes in the box as well and had no issues. I've flown Kulula with my bike in a bag and done the same. My mate flew his bike to Kenya on SAA in a box with helmet, shoes, tools and didn't have to pay anything else.

Usually if the weight exceeds 23 kgs, then they will just charge you the extra per kg price on the item. ie if it weighs 27 kgs they will charge you for an additional 4 kgs as the package is "heavier and therefore costs more to handle" than a 23 kg bag.

Then 200cm is a tiny box, Surely no box equaling 200cm would be big enough for a bike?

...that you're on the cusp of becoming part of an endangered species in the Netherlands, seeing as you will have to stop referring to your being a mountain biker, and now just a cyclist... :whistling:

Check that you don,t have a co2 canister in your tool bag .You will not need it in the Netherlands anyway

and don't ever ever refer to it as a 'bomb'

I lived in NL for almost 5 years, I suggest you start road biking, I dunno where you are gonna use your 29er there, especially is you are living in the Randstad.

200cm does seem small. Bike box is usually around:

width 25cm

length 155cm

height 85cm

Apparently there is some mountain biking to be done in the east. Also if he hops a train to Germany or France or Switzeland then the 29er could be handy

Sell your bike and buy something new while they on sale over here.

Stores clearing 2016 and 17 stock at good prices.

Canyon also had some great deals going.

Oh come on!

Proper mountainbiking is done in the south-east. And within an hour you are in Ferme Libert or Hürtgenwald (Google it, or ask Vink :-)
