I'm not trying to defend the driver but highlighting the dangers.

He was riding down a steep hill into the early morning sun. It was a cash in transit van that hit him.

If one considers the angle of the van on the hill in relation to the sun and the tiny thick windows, the driver must have been almost blind going down the hill.

I was also hit by a car who was blinded by the sun. I now plan my routes so that my back is to the sun at dawn or dusk.

If you can't see through your windscreen then you need to pull over and do something about and not continue driving.  Being blinded by the sun is not an excuse it is negligent.

Hey okes, let's get some facts before we start judging who was wrong...

Whether to debate that here or not, well...

As for the cyclist that got killed- terribly sad to hear. No matter who's at fault. My condolences to the family.

Mate , I know you are trying to be balanced here but reality is if you hit anyone or anything from behind because you were blinded but continued driving - don't point fingers . It is the driver and only the driver who is responsible for killing a man that is making a massively positive contribution to humankind. Sad, sad ,sad. RIP Brother

Maybe you didn't see all the photos that I saw. I even saw a photo with his body laying in the road. This happened a good 500 meters BEFORE the downhill starts to the firestation. The road here is still very much flat, with only a very, VERY slight down gradient. The steeper hills starts well away from where he was hit.

Exactly.

Rode past the spot this morning, no skid marks of any sort which leads one to believe that the van did not apply brakes at all prior to hitting him
