That also gives you 4.22w/per kg which is what the local Elites are pushing on avg if I remember correctly.

For TDF you'll have to double that

This math doesn't check out.

These are the threads I must avoid. I am 1.86 and 81kg and I now feel fat, slow and powerless.

But this is true.... you are old, slow, fat and powerless.....

and it's friday :)

You can call me slow. You can call me fat. You can even call me powerless. But I will never, ever be old. I am 'not young anymore'.

I would stick my neck out and say you need to lose 5-10kg to race elites.

Those numbers are good enough for VB, not so sure you'll hang with VA.

Out of interest, what sort of figures in terms of FTP's or W/Kg are average in the Faster / Licenced bunches - Mens/Womens Elites, VA, VB etc... anyone have an idea?

Average elite men will be 4.5-5. Otherside of 5 you are looking at top performing elites. Thats my guesstimates.

Absolute FTPs are harder to answer. Smit weighs nothing and Hoffman perpetually looks tubby.

[Edit]: An important factor to consider is repeatability. Top performing elites can hit high numbers. AND hit them consistently. The rest of us can smash an FTP test once-off and then need to drink chocolate melk for 2 days whilst we recover. Don't be training for once off numbers. Train for consistently high repeatable performances.

[Another edit]: Numbers aren't everything. There is a well respected poster in another forum who is constantly reminding people to race to their strengths. This guy when he raced had a Cat 4 FTP, but was racing Cat 1/2 because of bunch positioning and a strong sprint. He knew he wasnt going to win anything in the breakaway so he would conserve energy in races and use what limited power he did have to crush at sprint time. Basically, what I'm saying is, there is so much more to racing a bike than your power numbers. Those numbers give you a good indication of where you are at, but they are not the be all and end all. If you can read a race, thats at least bonus 50w in your back-pocket when you really need it.

My guesstimate for male riders in SA

Elite 5.5+

VA 5.0 - 5,5

VB 4.5 - 5.0

VC 4.0 - 4.5

Above for 20min effort

Power is only 80% of racing i would say.

Yesterday is a perfect example, got dropped but numbers were higher then top guys.

Its all about putting everything together..on the day.

Trust me, I do. I have work colleagues that weight almost double what I do and when we braai at work or go out for a pub lunch they can't believe how I can put the chow away. But I can put the calories in because I burn them frequently.

I think you have one of those metabolisms that goes at rocket speed.

Can I borrow it for a few weeks / months ??
