You buy or you don't buy - there no dibs.

To me dibs means "you can't sell it to anyone but me until I say so but I'm not giving you any guarantees whatsoever". No chance. Money in hamd gets the goods.

Calling Dibs really means nothing. I have had it before when we exchange banking details and the buyer falls off the face of the earth.

To just cover myself, I send the buyer a msg to say if i have not had payment by the next day before 12h00, i contact the next buyer in line.

24hrs and goods must be paid for and collected.  You cannot call DIBS if the ball and chain must still approve the transaction.  You cannot call DIBS if you cannot collect within 24hrs in person or by proxy.  (i.e. out of area cannot call DIBS)  (Cash is also king here)

DIBS implies a quick and clean transaction with no drama or long stories

FFS .... DIBS !!!

Dibs does not apply for an item which is for sale already. When an item goes on sale, you fkn buy it or you dont.

DIBS is when one of your mates has something that you and the rest of the mates would love to have. You say "Hey if you ever sell that thing I want first DIBS "

If everyone hears it, and you are all honorable gents, then the mate will make contact with the guy who called DIBS and say, "Hey I've decided to sell this thing now, are you still interested ? " If he is he will buy it, if not it goes onto the open market, and then it is fair game for anyone.

Ok rant over

Hi All!

What is a reasonable time to wait for the first who called "DIBS" to finalize sale before moving on?

I feel it is not my responsibility to remind you to complete the sale.

Especially once banking details have been provided.

I am not going to nag you to complete the sale.

I have been waiting for 48hours + now...

So how long till I get to move on to the other interested parties?

oh.. that's brave posting this on a Friday. You'll get every sour and annoyed member coming out of their angry place and grumbling about money or nothing.

...that said. I see dibs as a good place to set a time stamp on who saw it and is keen when there are several ways of contacting a buyer and then followed up with a call message saying 'i'll take it'. Yeah if the money doesn't come then move on but we are community so I believe in working with people. I've held chain rings for a week for a guy to front up and pay and I'll alway give the first guy the first go and we have to agree on a time frame. I'll also tell the others this time frame and that if this guy doesn't pitch then it's on to the next one. Dibs is happy with the price advertised as well. You want to negotiate, take your chance.

It's the way I've been treated mostly and the way I'd like it to carry on. I hope that by doing deals this way then we are a community rather than a wheel based gumtree.

This dibs thing is a bit tough.

I had a guy once rant at me for calling dibs via e-mail (my ad specifically said DM) but he basically wanted me to reverse the deal with the guy I sold too, because he mailed me before the other called dibs on the comments.

In summary, there is no clear cut solution, the trick is, treat buyers/sellers in a way that you would want to be treated if you are a buyer/seller.... It is subjective, but its a start.

- Call the seller ASAP if you want the item advertised...

- Agree on a price...and also a time frame in which things would happen (one hour / one day / one week / whatever is agreed)

***I've had a seller wait 3 weeks for me, BUT that was agreed and BOTH were happy with the arrangement...and he was not in a hurry to get cash in hand.

- Get the correct bank details...or if COD

- Pay the seller...or collect the goods with cash / EFT (as agreed)

- Everybody is happy.

- Communication is KING!!!!!!!!!

It may also depend on how QUICK you want the cash / moola / zakke   if you need the cash ASAP, then if buyer does not rock up / communicate swiftly (as agreed)...then move on to the next buyer, but the seller MUST communicate this clearly to the buyer (IMHO).
