Has Garmin lost its edge?

Considering the factors here, what do you think would be an acceptable solution?

Clearly the customer is loosing faith in the unit he now owns, so a similar offer but on an upgrade to a more reliable model perhaps?

Its Garmin, they must have a few other multi sport products that the OP could try.

That’s a good suggestion.

When my ForeRunner230 finally gave in, they offered me the new version for a small fee. Think I ended up paying R2000 for the current equivelant.

Having to replace a R6500 watch because it only lasted a year is not so awesome. Replacement value is irrelevant.

There is an inherent risk in buying any product. You knew it had a 1 year warranty when you bought it. It failed after the warranty expired - unlucky that you drew a bad straw - but that's what insurance is for. Garmin went above and beyond their agreement with you... so you either have to accept their genrous offer, claim from insurance, or pay retail for another product. Up to you, but in my (and many other hubber's experience), Garmin has provided excellent after sales service and support. I for one will keep buying what they are selling.

Damage to my Edge (pun not intended referring to thread title ????) 800 during a race when my mount snapped off.

Paid 1500 then for a newest model in the range - 810

Garmin is like cwc in hub land.Hubbers will defend them to the last.

Agree it is crap for something to last so short, especially when we know they make solid stuff.

Not cool for the dude to say there are no known problems.

Pay the R2k and see if you can get a different model. Even try to get the new warranty extended.

But I think garmin has put a good offer on the table which they not obligated to do.

Yes it is a loss, but you can limit the damage depending on the route you take

That was then.

They have become a little more sticky now.

I've been waiting for a replacement unit for over a month now, and I'm doubtful anyone from Navworld is going to get back to me anytime soon

Totally agree with you Dino, it is absolute bullsh*t that such an item should only last 13 months. It is an electronic item, nothing wears out. Imagine if every electronic item you purchased broke after 13 months, like your laptop, tv or hifi, the manufacturer would get such a bad name for quality they would go out of business. Irrespective of the warranty, would you have purchased the item if they had said that it will stop working in 13 months? Not a f*ck would you have. So they offer you a replacement unit at R2000. Big f*cken w@nk! Now all of a sudden your R6500 Garmin costs you R8500. Not such a competitive price any more.

Google has already killed the SatNav market and with stuff like this it looks like Garmin are committing suicide in the sports/fitness market too.  Not cool Garmin, up your game, you have ever increasing competition out there!

At this stage, we only have one side of the story.

Irrelevant of that though, and what stage would you say it would be reasonable for them not to replace a watch that breaks?? 14 months? 18 months? 20 months? Perhaps 3 yrs?....

Incorrect. It's a 24 month warranty

Hmmm, NO!

Apple - 1 year

https://store.apple.com/Catalog/Images/worldwidewarranty.html

Samsung - 1year

https://www.samsung.com/us/support/service/warranty/SM-R760NDAAXAR

Sony - 1year

Perhaps check facts before giving an opinion. ????

With cellphones, some of the local carriers would include an extended warranty for devices in their packages that they take responsibility for

You make it sound like all Garmin devices fail after 13 months, which is obviously not the case.

Their warantee period is on par with industry standards (there are exceptions - TomTom, Suunto, etc), and the warrantee period/terms were not hidden from anyone.

Yet they go beyond their own T&Cs to still provide a replacement unit at 1/3 of the price, which they don't have to do. Show me another brand that does that with out of warrantee products - the best I've had has been something like wholesale price + vat, or 10% off retail.

All Suunto watches are 2 years, and on the Spartan range, wich had some known issues they extended it to 3 years. That is reasonable, no?

Say for instance the watch came with a 24 month warranty, would the OP would still feel aggrieved if the watch broke in month 25? It's easy to say its 'just out of warranty', but a line needs to be drawn

Garmin has a list of 'warranty problems', if your problem is on the list its quick replacement. If not on the list, understandably they may want to look into it.

I had my Edge 810 replaced in December - problem: non-responsive screen. I now have an 820

You can bicker about it all you want, you can puff your little chests all you want about how you “feel” this is unfair, and that “hubland” is not objective about Garmin, but non of that will change the fact that Garmin are well within their rights.

But you are yet (besides Swiss) to present a reasonable alternative. So instead of just making noise, why not put a solution out there?

Stop with your logic it has no place in an emotive argument!
