AS if we don't already have enough to contend with we now have to add fellow cyclists to the list.

Roadrage !!

So I was riding (mid day 32*C) from Main Road Glencairn up the valley toward Welcome Glen on Glen Rd the quietest and most chilled route on the peninsula. Ahead of me is a lone cyclist on a white Eddy Merckx with red lettering and an older model. Rider mid 50's shortish stocky about 95kg. Me early 60's scrawny 67kg tallish sort of like a rake.

I slowly catch up and on passing him (no cars in sight) I turn my head and “Hi – I thought I was about the only one that uses this route but I see there are more”

Looks at me look turns into stare and then all hell breaks loose.

It's been a long time since I've heard that many expletives strung together and “don't …...... ride next to me you are endangering my …... life …. “

“Are you feeling ok – unbelievable!!” says me – big mistake

From then on I was harassed on the road for the next couple of 100m

He then came from behind punched the heel of his hand into my ribs on my back which equals assault.

The more I did not say anything the more incensed he became and kept on harassing.

Long story short – when a car came up the road I got off my bike in the middle of the road and stopped the car and asked them to just stick around. Which he did. After some minutes the cyclist turned around and went down the road.

I am still gobsmacked !!

What to do ???

Could not get my phone camera out.

If he posts his ride on STRAVA - been watching flyby's – I should get his name and will be laying charges of assault and harassment.

Are there any other ways of picking up rides on Strava for today?

This is the short version of the story

Please watch out for a white older Eddy Merckx with red lettering with a not so young rider in the southern peninsula.

Sorry to hear dude! Glad you ok. Keep and eye out for him, take a pic.... post it here ????

Dashcams are already a feature on our cars up here, seems we need to invest in one for the bike as well.

Slightly gobsmacked.

Gonna go out on an obvious limb here... He is either on stuff that he is not supposed to be taking or he is not on some stuff that he is supposed to be taking.

Fukkit. Take a baseball bat with you in your car and pass by every so often. He'll be back. Then you teach him some manners

Seriously not worth that sort of thing.

Seriously swak one. There was an incident here a few years ago where a couple of MTB okes had some trail rage, caught on tape too. Both of the parties looked right spanner, even the one who was technically 'right'. So not just a Capey roadie thing then! I'd just get over it though if I were you Porqui. You're just gonna waste time and effort trying to pin something to that 'fellow'...

PS I once got punched in the mouth twice by a motorist (in Maritzburg around 1992). I remember how much I wanted revenge, I was bawling my eyes out in frustration going up Old Howick Road because I felt so powerless to do anything about it. Can be hard to let it go...

WOW Porqui what a *** experience

I thought you were going to say he just stared ahead and ignored you...but noooo!! WRONG

Unbelievable, even by SA standards (aggro types)

Maybe next time just nod your head, or raise a little finger in acknowledgement (As in I see you, not F you)

There is so much aggression just below the surface at the moment. I wonder if it is because we're all scared at the moment, feel ourselves to be under threat and so the fight response is more easily activated. Often the dog that bites is an insecure animal.

What a cr@p experience though - I so seldom overtake anyone that it could never happen to me.

People in the Cape have lost their minds

They are generally waterlogged or goofed so the lift does not always go to the top floor....
