Good point.

Give a golfer the option between winning The Open and an Olympic medal, the majority preferred the chance to hold the Claret Jug instead of a medal around the neck.

Makes sense that cyclists would think the same.

Willie is also in this predicament.. if he is selected by his team (and reading his tweets is seems he is scheduled for Ardennes..he should really just go ride Ardennes IMO)

Finished reading Stuart o'grady's autobiography the other day. He was entirely the opposite - Olympics the pinnacle and all that.

When they introduced golf into the Olympics at Rio (if I remember correctly) many of the golfers played at the Olympics rather than a regular tournament on the tour as it was a chance to win a medal and be part of a team country (team USA, Team GB etc) and experience the whole vibe, athletes village etc .... The tournament they could play anytime in the following years, the opportunity to play, win and possibly have an Olympic medal was the greater accolade.

There's a difference between Olympics and Commonwealth, Cavenish pulled out of TDF to ride Olympics, cant see him having done similar for Commonwealth.

What determines how many riders can be sent in a category? UCI points as well?

Only one road woman and mtb man going - while our two best in those categories, surely there are other (younger?) riders who could use the experience?

My thoughts as well...why is everyone on about the Olympics?

Olympics you can claim "best in the world" - Commonwealth is best of the white racist countries**

**this is a Friday joke of course but best of everybody always trumps best of some.

I think they could have chosen a couple of other athletes....for better medal contentions.
