Clavicle Plate Removal?

Recommended Posts

So... a few years down the line, and my shoulder keeps on to "tighten" up during cold / damp spells.

I also have very frequent (relunctant to use constant) sharp pain when moving my arm upward, forward, and slightly in towards the medial line. This might be because of an impingement of the anterior deltoid.

Just scheduled an appointment with the surgeon to see if the plate can be remove.

good idea, or am I chasing the wrong solution?

I had mine removed - mainly as it was really tender when pressure was placed upon it. To be honest, it did not make much difference to the pressure pain & I ended up with quite a big "bump" of bone. You also have to go through the whole theatre & anesthetic thing again which is a bit of a PITA.

I have since managed to add another one to my other clavicle & have no intentions of removing this one.

still a good idea in my books as my doc said one risk is if you break it on the same spot again you'll be ripping those screws through your bone , I opted for the 8 weeks in a sling

I broke mine in 2010, plate is still in there with no pain, irritation or anything.

No issues on cold mornings at all, its almost like it isnt there.

Maybe Im lucky?

Some people say have it removed but like I said above that it doesnt bug me, I do worry about breaking it again somehow with the plate and screws still in there and thats a whole different load of *** to deal with...

Mine still in after almost 3 years

The plate and screws were quit expensive according to the hospital bill

If removed, I am going to sell it on e bay... ^_^

- first owner.

- used only once.-

- Installed by professional

 - well looked after

 - No accident damage

Mine is still in after 10 years but it irritates the hell out of me if I wear a chest protector on my dirt bike or a heavy backpack... anything that rubs against it really. Couldn't be bothered to have it removed though, I've got a heavier duty one in my femur as well.

I've just done number 3 and have had the previous plate removed due to them irritating me and the possibility of a more severe fracture in the future.

The skinny guys do battle more with the irritation due to less covering.

Differs from patient to patient.

All about potential benefit vs intervention risks and complications.
You need to decide if the pain and limitation of daily/lifestyle functioning is severe enough to warrant the risks of the procedure.

Your doctor should inform you of the risks and potential complications and you make the decision as to what's best for yourself.

Had an inconvenient fall 4 weeks ago... Dislocated my collar bone and had surgery - hook plate (alien) inserted.

Will be removed again in 3 months.

Think this procedure is different to a collarbone break.

Do you do any form of exercise?

Weight training and rotator cuff strengthening exercises can help though.

Please tell me more about the rotator cuff exercise......i also had a rotator cuff op. but the doc repaired some torn muscles aswell. I am 9 weeks later but very painfull and limited movement. I can see and feel one of the screws on the top, it is not nice , according to the doc it can be removed later........

There are a tonne of exercises you can do. Youtube for instructions.

Obviously you'll need to start with small weights, you'd probably struggle with 0.5kg dumbbells 4 weeks after your op. Elastic bands are also great.

And when you are fully healed, you can start doing shoulder dislocations with a broom stick;

Its actually a shoulder separation and not a dislocation. That Shoulder hook plate is ***

Good luck
