Public holidays cause havoc with Postnet 2 Postnet deliveries...
Had something posted from Nelspruit on Wednesday afternoon. It seems I SHOULD get a notification to collect today only. That's 7 days...

I think the diff between Postnet and PnP/Aramex is that with Postnet if you drop off your parcel in the afternoon, it will only get collected the next day - most branches have the delivery vehicle collect goods around 2-3pm

With Aramex I think they collect in the evenings, gets taken to the sorting hub same night and gets sorted and dispatched for delivery that very same night - hence faster delivery times...

I have used the shipping service offered at Pick & Pay .... R100 gets you a decent sized bag, and whatever can fit in there will be delivered within 24hrs to the recipients door (If both of you are within major city areas).

Has not let me down yet.

On that note, why is it the buyers responsibility to pay/organize shipping. Surely this is, at the minimum, a 50/50 deal?

Yep

as a buyer you can also choose not to buy the item, just the way the dice rolls ...

And I often do if the seller is being a tart IRT postage

You want to sell me something, I want to buy that something from you.

Postage, effort wise and financially, should be split unless the buyer is in Abuh Dabuh land

Aramex for the win I'm sending it. Send the box one day, buyer gets it the next day and it's tracked and a a keen buyer get's their kit nice and quick. Postnet is an also ran for me because of the time, got to go get it, the size issue vs weight issue etc. Good thing is you can often get a bulkier item in a padded box in their size definition than in the Aramex envelope.

Only issue I often have about sending items is that buyers often expect R99 postnet to postnet on a sub R500 item and that the seller buy a solid box, buys bubble wrap, packing tape etc out of the sale price.

also bear in mind that often sellers sell at "rock bottom prices" and can also sell to another person closer to home .... but this is all conjecture, every sale is different.

I have sold frames, bikes, etc .... and the amount of time and material that goes into boxing larger items can never be charged for in anyway.

I have an account with The Courier Guy. Overnight delivery anywhere in SA for about R85. Much easier and cheaper for me and the buyer than PostNet to PostNet. Has come in handy many times - not just BikHun sales.

Having an account does make things easier and I believe, cheaper.

Some couriers will not take your business if you do not have an account with them....in Durban anyway (eg:Dawn Wing)

My 2c from using various methods.

Postnet - Unless your buyer insists on it I dont see the point. They dont win on price or speed, and I have to drive there to deliver/collect

Aramex - If you'd asked me 3 weeks ago I would have said that they were fantastic. I mean R99, overnight, what's not to like? But the last item I bought I had delivered to me via Aramex only to receive someone else's package. Long story short, Aramex said that the waybills must have fallen out of the package and the driver must have switched them and basically there is no insurance so I'm out of luck.

Courier Guy - Cant say enough good things about these guys, especially their same day local service. If I buy something that is going to take me more than 1 hour to drive and collect I'll send them. R50-60, same day, no need to even leave my office. Their overnight prices on small items rivals that of Postnet (and destroys them on delivery time and convenience) and Aramex and their economy prices on larger items (think bikes and in door trainers) is very reasonable. I should mention that I do have an account with them for work purposes, maybe that helps

I'm sure there are plenty of other well priced and reliable couriers out there but for me Courier Guy is number one

I worry abut dropping things off in those Aramex boxes, they are susceptible to looting in my opinion. Much better to sign off on the waybill and get a physical receipt for shipping,

I suppose that boils down to the communication and good will between you and the buyer/seller.

If it's a highly prized item it's just easier not to have to ship and you will sell it. I don't ever 'need' to sell anything so as the seller, my time is often worth a lot more than the 300 bucks I'm selling the item for. I'm not going to jump through hoops for you if you're already getting a bargain and you're being a d**s about it.

If you need it in such a rush, go to an LBS and pay for it... (obviously not always, just if you're being all 'I'm in such a rush but won't pay full price' about it and make it your problem)

what about when someone sends you something and you haven’t paid for it yet? And he sent it sharpish to help you out ? Do you pay interest when you eventually get his bank details ????... nudge nudge wink wink

It does make life alot easier, and luckily accounts are very easy to open (well easier than driving to Postnet anyway). Like Schmorglebot mentioned, I really can't say enough good things about The Courier Guy, their overnight means overnight and their drivers are very friendly and willing to help. Their pricing is also brilliant in comparison to other courier services.

Not talking about jumping through hoops here.

The standard arrangement seems to be "Buyer responsible for postage"

Sure, if the seller can find a buyer that's willing to collect (instead of delivering because he's a lazy twat) then by all means, but it's expected that buyers should pick up the tab for an item that YOU are selling

I don't see Cash Crusaders driving after sellers

anyway, just my view on the matter
