Pump track, Claremont

Hi Yall,

I got roped into the local civic assiciation, while stuck at the meeting I asked if I could build a pump track on the piece of land behind my place. (Next to Rosmead Spar) Turns out the land is not owned by municipality and is part of a 45 year old land claim. So... going to build a pump track.

Any tips, I am going to start with weed eater a track, then if nobody notices it much, shovel a few rollers into it, then if all goes well get some clay for berms.

All good & well with the initiative, Kudos, just be prepared for the heart ache that will follow when it does eventually get thrown down for a new development etc. Maybe approach the guys from TrailTroops & see if they can offer some sort of advise & assistance.

Sounds good. Hopefully people in the community see it as a good thing

If you can get away the noise them hire a Bobcat.

It took me 3 days from rough bush to 95% complete 500m long course with jumps, drops, berms etc in my back yard.

You should be able to knock out a guerrilla pumptrack in 1 day.

Otherwise mates with shovels and beer works well. Make one section, ride it, make another section, ride it. Repeat until done :-)

Best of luck.

Took on a bike track project in our local town.

Be prepared, it takes a lot more time, effort and money than I anticipated.

After two years still not complete, I do not look at new bikes or enter events, all the spare cash is going into the track.

Lucky to ride it once or twice a month.

this one?....I'd make double sure you know exactly who actually owns it before investing time and money into it.

It’s the other portion which is not the sports field.

We know it’s not council etc as they refuse to do anything in terms of looking after it.

I hate to break it to you Savage but 'not wanting to look after it or do anything' means the likelihood of it belonging to the 'council' is probably increased #JustSaying [emoji6]

It's in Cape Town. The municipality miss lawns and cuts bushes and picks up litter on its plots and green belts to keep it clean.

Savage, start building the track, it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission, and if someone comes forward and tunes you for building on their property, then just walk away from it.

Mark the course out with chalk or tape, then either cut out the grass, or spray it with Roundup (don't let a greenie see you) and then start building rollers.

Don't dig holes for the rollers in the course, everything needs to be raised to allow drainage, so get soil from elsewhere (ie a couple of meters away from your track) for your berms and rollers.

Just a heads up. It is a boat load of work to get it to be lekker. And will require maintenance.
