Foam rollers

In some of the race/stage recovery topics I see mention of foam rollers, however very little other discussion here on the Hub.

How uses them, which ones? Are they used as special tool for resolving a problem or more routine after each ride?

You should have posted this on a Friday! Differing schools of thought on this, which will come out in the wash...

For me, I use a 'standard' one - small raised dots on the surface - regularly. Mainly calves, hamstrings, quads and ITB, but I also stretch these areas regularly including an ITB stretch suggested by V12man elsewhere on the Hub.

I find I get tracking issues in my patella if I don't roll regularly, which relate back to shortening/tightness in quads etc. Had it all prescribed by a physio and I've enough field data that if I skip too many roll-stretch sessions, then I get knee pain, which dissipates the more roll-stretch sessions I do.

Haha. I’ve seen the different schools of thought on them. What I was more wondering (for those who do use them) is if they are used preventatively or only if an issue comes up. Seems like routinely is the way to go.

I enjoy using a foam roller especially for glutes and ITB area.

I struggle a bit when it comes to the calves to get the pressure just right, but I've realised that when I drop my foot while rolling my calves it hurts like a beach

I use mine as much as possible. For me it is best to use it every day.Personally I found it better to do more short sessions than one big roll.

I use one after every race and harder training rides. As well as when I feel a muscle is a little bit sore. I have the one with ridges. I do however have to try do it behind closed doors as my dogs and lightie think its just a game. The dogs just want to lick me and my lightie wants to climb on top of me.

We bought one similar to this one from Sportsman's a few months ago.

Certainly helps to relieve aches and pains (although causing a few while you use it...)

It's like banging your head against some facebrick...feels good when you stop.

Me, I prefer recovery by skipping....

I skip the whole foam roller scene.. but then again, my training load does not justify recovery assistance by the devil's spawn.

Muscle activation, foam roller, stretching, core exercises.

Great routine for me.

Even if you do not train hard it promotes relaxation and overall strength.

You get softer foam rollers too if you are 'sensitive'.

I've got the one with little foam and built around a plastic centre. Hurts like hell.
