Practical jokes

Sorry to hear about this because that was not a practical joke!

Anybody with a brain could work out the consequences so it is with intent that I think it was done!

Who could be so dumb!!

Heel fast mate, think of "pay-back" while you rest his stupidity out.

That's the most idiotic idea of a joke I've ever heard of.

It's like calling the loosening of someones car wheel bolts a joke instead of sabotage.

I'm not sure how 3rd party insurance works when you deliberately injure another, but perhaps the safety of being able to claim will allow the guilty party to own up.

Also: Don't quite understand how this all went down.

I was just about to say the same. Sounds more like your unknown pal sabotaged your bike rather than play a prank? Or is it just because of the extent of injuries...

Either way, i hope for your sake you heal faster and can ride again over the holidays!

If that happened to me my legal fees would have been through the roof as I defended myself against the assault charge that would have been inevitable after blikseming him into the bed next to mine....

to those who asked how it happened:

The innocent part:

The chain runs over the jockey wheels and there is a small safety iron thingy that keep the chain in place; should you ever drop the chain along the way. So the practical joker removed the jockey wheel and draped the chain over the safety thingy after which the jockey wheel was replaced.

The result, a unpleasant noise that sounds like you are "in between" gears.

As far as I can see not really dangerous , I only wish that was all that he did.

The irresponsible part

My pannier frame is connected to seat tube with two bolts. This was loosened just enough that I wouldn't notice.

And here the fun start.

My office is situated upon a small hill. Normally I get on the bike, 6 to 10 rotations to get in motion and I am free wheeling down the hill. I heard the "gggrrrrrr" sound and up shifted to find the right gear placement. Tried that a few times but the the noise continued.

So I shifted my weight in a attempt to see if anything was stuck in the derailleur and this weight displacement was just enough to shift the whole load that was in/ on my panniers into the spokes of the back wheel. After that I was free flying.

So this is what happened. Ja, its now around 2240 and the house is quiet and I'm sitting at the dining room table. Too sore to go to bed. Fukkit, this isn't fun.

Someone needs to step up and own this

Is it possible that the bolts worked loose over time No Hare? Vibrations do tend to do that to bolts unless a bit of loctite has been added. It has to be someone quite determined to take allen keys to work to pull a prank

I don't have any (blue) loctite on any part of my mtb and road bike and I have had a rear derailleur sprocket bolt come loose on the mtb. The chain simply jammed and in no way is it possible for it to get on the outside of the cage retainer like it was on op's.

Thanks for that idea but it was quickly disregarded by the group of amateur engineers and mechanics that had a look at the bike. (Place backyard mechanic emoticon here)

It is a bolt and lock-nut"- system that keep the pannier in place, actual force is required to loosen the bolts.

I know the guilty party will not come forward so what I am attempting to convey with this self pity writing attempts is:

Don't mess with other peoples bikes

Jeez man.

What a cowardly person to not own up and apologize to you for a joke gone wrong.

Probably the same sort of person who would hit a cyclist and speed off hoping to get away with it, leaving the guy for dead.

On another note:

How many people work in your office?

Who else there is a cyclist with the tools who knows his way around a bike?

If nobody owns up, take it up with the HR department or management.
