The CAA were planning on replacing the airplane this year. So it might be that the equipment wasn’t the latest and greatest.

Now some here on the Bikehub is going to jump to the conclusion that it was an insurance scam........

Is the Garmin terrain product the only one on the market, I would have thought this would be a highly competitive market segment?

No there are others, Honeywell/ Bendix King, Universal, Sandel, Collins, L3, Aspen, Thales.... being the major ones

One of the parts of the calibration process, is to fly arcs, through the centreline/ localiser at , at least 2 distances from the " station" . The arcs normally extend to approximately 2-4 nm on either side of the centreline/ localiser, and must also require a turn and reverse coarse arc. I stand under correction, 1 arc is at 13 DME/nm, which is very close to the arc, reportedly been flown, when this tragedy occurred.

At my present airport, the above mentioned arcs are flown at 6 nm and 15nm.

These arcs are flown for Every runway with an ILS and as far as I know a VOR approaches for which is published, in this case arcs for Rwy11 and 29.

It appears they were possibly flying the arc(s) for Rwy 11, thus west of airport. At bigger airports, with parallel rwys , this gets very complicated together with arriving and departing air traffic.

I have not been home for weeks but I understand the weather was crap. I find it amazing that this type of technical and very involved flying was happening in rubbish weather.........so sad...RIP Aviators. I am angry though.....this looks to me much like crew error. So unnecessary, I would love to be proven wrong. Buggar, those mountains extend for 100’s of km’s either side of George with clear ocean to the south, been this way for ever......Situational stuff up methinks. I am finding it hard to belive that the crew were operating north of the approach path to the easterly runway in such weather at such an altitude. Just say no when the weather is not playing ball.

I have read elsewhere that this aeroplane has relatively recently had issues with smoke in the cockpit but had been cleared after maintenance action. Aweful if that problem reoccured.

So the boss said I need to chase my dreams .... despite suffering from motion sickness

You fly boys need some "real" flying ... as in 3D, not this one dimensional stuff ...

From your own experiences, any recommendations on flight schools in CT? Yes, I can search google, but hearing from those that have done it always helps the decision. So any advice ?

EDIT:

Looking for a rotary school ... helicopter type....

Jeepers, awesome. Have fun man! I was keen on the fling wings originaly but the initial cost to CPL put me off as did the struggle for a decent job on such a machine. Seems that back at that stage of my career the good helo jobs required much experience on big expensive multi engine helos, largely going to ex SAAF guys. I am definitely not sorry with the way my fixed wing career has panned out.

Perhaps some day I will undertake the challenge of learning to fly a little hedge trimmer (Robbie) for pleasure as I have had the excitement of flying out of my garden in a Jet Ranger, years ago, different location!
