Man.....this accident makes me mad. I am so sorry for this youngsters family and friends, so unnecessary. I gave up instructing about 12 years ago but as a (and I say this truly humbly) more experienced member of my current employers pilot pool, it hurts to read this. I really feel for the instructor who signed off the Solo and solo consolidation and I truly hope the instruction given is not found lacking. Sadly IMHO, this type of accident, baring mechanical failure is totally avoidable with a firm grasp of basic aerodynamic principles and aeroplane operating procedures. A Cherokee is perhaps one of the most docile training aeroplanes. Very upset to have learned of this........I have been off Avcom several days.

Yes, I feel you there. My thoughts, and mine alone, is that youngsters can be very clever and adept in learning new stuff, but what they sometimes lack is the correct intuitive reactions for dangerous conditions. And maybe she experienced a bad collection of conditions for which her training in itself did not quite prepare her for. You know that condition where you actually know what to do under normal conditions, but when crap hits the fan you react instinctively in a different manner.

BTW, one of my life long dreams was to get my PPL. But I just never had the money nor the time.

I see a preliminary report is out on the Airbus A320 crash of Pakistan International.  Full on pilot error.

Any Saffas still trying to get back home, should you get offered a repatriation flight on a Pakistan carrier ... I suggest you rather walk home.

The Zim Air Boeing that would have taken us home on Sunday is currently stuck in Bangkok after it had to turn back with only one working engine:

I had to change work leave and connecting flight to Jhb 3 times (just today) - and it is going on for 1.5+ weeks now.

It feel like the wild west - we jumped between so many flight options, cancellations, permits. I'm on 3 WhatsApp groups (getting in Malaysia, Out of SA to Asia etc), and one cant make up the scenarios that play out with some people.

That said - there are amazing people that have the ability to flourish in this environment and arrange flights in this dynamic time with 100's of people - not by online booking, but with WhatApp, Excel and phone calls.

Hope to be home soon.

Hope you make it home soon. I have a friend who has been stuck in Lagos this entire time....family is taking strain.

I am desperately trying to get to Dubai or Dallas for sim recurrent at the beginning of August. The previous repatriation flights to Dubai did not work for me due quarantine and sim dates. I have rebooked sim 3 times now! Just booked Dallas in order to gain more options.

I have no idea what flying training costs these days ( I suppose Google is my friend there!) but you should give it a go if able. One of my dreams is to fly a Spitfire. About £5500 in UK. Includes time in a Tiger Moth and a Harvard too but you do not achieve a rating on any. That is likely to remain a dream!

With the rate Covid-19 is spreading in Texas I am not sure how good your chances will be in Dallas.

Been thinking the same. Focus is trying to get to Dubai now. KLM have a repatriation flight to Amsterdam on Sunday, but booking is closed due to the paperwork requirements for Government.

Possible flight to Cairo this month and I know SAA is planning a London one but no dates set yet.

LWB I assume that the Comair Max is still parked there as well? Given their current Business Rescue process one wonders if the airframe will ever fly for Comair in SA again.

We don't do their Max, Lufthansa does. COMAIR actually cancelled their contract with us when they signed with Lufthansa almost 2 years ago but the agreement was that the aircraft would move across slowly while Lufthansa grows. I think we have sent only 3 or 4 over to Lufthansa. BUT they not happy with Lufthansa and rumor has it they want to come back. Comair is Lufthansa's only customer and with Comair not paying or flying I don't see why Lufthansa would stick around(Maybe I am just saying this as it means works for me when Comair come back to us).

EDIT: the Max was all part of the Lufthansa deal so we have never touched it.

That is definitely not a Cessna. But good work by the pilot and I am sure the driver is glad he had a dash cam, who would have believed him without video proof.

My brother in law used to be based at Grand Central and would often do test flights for clients whos planes has some work done on them.

He was telling us once about a test that went wrong, I dont remember the full details but I recall it had something to do with fuel, the engine shut down on his way back to GC so he lined up the N1 for emergency landing and whilst going through the prep for the landing was still furiously trying to get the engine going again.

Somehow he managed to get it going and landed safely back at GC

That was damn good piloting skills. He also just touched down before that overhead wire.

Literally the length between the previous post and the one with the overhead wires. The piloting skills were exceptional. And to steer the plane down the very narrow highway also took some doing seeing as how close the trees are to the verge of the road.

Can just imagine the local authority ASI (aviation safety inspector) eyes popping out his head if he saw that.

Even tho the plane sounds like a vow beetle and probably flys at the same speed as a beetle I wonder how the wing aerodynamics are affected by both bikes
