Get rid of bushes at dangerous robot on Suikerbossie?

The intersection would be a lot safer if the bushes on the left hand side (going down) were removed so vehicles at the robot could see up the road. Anyone know who to contact to try make that happen?

I wasn't concentrating and breezed through that light the other day. It was green but if it had changed I would have had a hard time stopping. Thats sure to happen to others, people from out of town caught out by the new robot etc..

The bushes are gone

Since you know you would have trouble stopping in time, maybe next time approach an intersection more cautiously. yes, it's a sad throwing away all that downhill moment, but this the price for being on the road and being a good road user. Bush or no bush, entering an intersection cautiously is a required approach for all road users.

I comfortably brought my recumbent (braking on a 20" front wheel is properly crappy) to a full stop for those lights from 72km/h the last time I descended Suikerbossie. Anyone who claims not to be able to stop is taking the piss.

Obviously, while I was stopped and waiting for it to change, no fewer than 23 riders breezed through on red, without even slowing. What is wrong with people?

Thanks David, I think its a worthwhile question. I haven't been around the route for a few weeks due other rides, to see what has been cut. There are definitely a few places where they can/should clear some of the larger bushes and it will help IMHO.

Its good to at least ask what else can be done, its the third serious incident in a similar spot in the last few months that I can recall. Possibly some additional warning signs, or flashing lights. People (both cyclists and motorists) make mistakes ... its part of being human.

I know when I did an emergency stop at the bottom once even with my disc brakes on the road bike I've part skidded and it took longer to stop than I though - depends on rider weight, road conditions etc. These incidents have made me personally slow down when I'm descending suikerbossie on training rides.

Bushes were definitely cut in response to the last incident there, but as is with most things, it's unlikely to be ongoing without repeated requests for it.

Likewise, good choices by cyclists/road users are unlikely to be ongoing without constant reminders.

So keep doing the right thing guys.!

That intersection is there for a reason. Many people have been lobbying for it for years, and in that time there were multiple fatalities. I was witness to one such accident where a motorcyclist and a women driving in her car both lost their lives.

I can only imagine trying to enter quick moving traffic from those side roads without any traffic control and the likely chaos.

Agreed. Drove it again this afternoon, after riding it this morning, just to make sure I wasn't seeing things and the council has gone for a full Brazilian. Unless the OP is talking about a different intersection? The one where Mount Rhodes comes in?

I would imagine so. I used to rent a place in Little Lions Head Road many years ago. It was a pain to enter traffic. And that was in 1995, when the traffic did not have the volumes it is now. The biggest problem were bikers that opened up their bikes on Suikerbossie from the bottom traffic lights. The road makes a slight bend and it is difficult to cross when you only see fast moving cars/bikes at the last second once you already made your mind up that it was clear to cross.

My experience as well. On seeing it turn orange I had more than enough time to stop safely but an idiot nearly crashed into me from behind before going straight over, followed by a few more, by now going over a very solid red. Idiots!

Stopping at a red light is a legal requirement, and being on a bicycle does not make one exempt. Anything short of stopping when required to is illegal and just plain stupid.

If you are the cyclist who thinks it's okay not to stop, you arent part of the problem, you ARE the problem.
