Pigs in the Peleton

Ok so I’ve never ridden in a peloton so call it poetic license. I find the amount of plastic and other crap scattered around the roads by cyclists in organized rides absolutely disgraceful.

After the last 3 weekend cycles around the Paarl area, the amount of Gu packets, energy bar wrappers, banana peels left on the road is mind boggling. I can forgive the occasional bottle dropped and broken but the rest is just being a yob.

I can’t believe that in the current day an age of being sensitive to environmental concerns people still don’t give a shyte.

Very disappointing.

Ok and a dropped mamil.

I counted around 40 odd wrappers on the Sportif today alone. On the 99er maybe 30 or so?

Regardless of group it’s a disgrace.

Racing is no excuse but one can almost understand the odd accidentally dropped item.

What's even more annoying are peeps on social/training rides who can't keep their crap in their pockets until they get home.

I see broken beer bottles, discarded McDonalds/KFC/Steers/Nandos boxes/bags, sigarette stompies, crashed car bumpers+lights and not to mention the oil and the occasional trafic light looking like a dead stickman, etc.... all along almost any given road lying in the grass growing over the pavement you can barely see...everything outside along our roads and parks is one huge trashcan. We live among filthy pigs in all parts of our society.

Didn't see a single wrapper in 91k of the sportif today.

Instead of counting them why not pick them up?

I did. About half of them. I ran out of space in my pockets.

Maybe you are blinded on getting there fast rather than appreciating your surroundings. Yeah my time sucks because of it but so what. I’m not there to prove my head is in my arse.

That's part of the problem...leaving it up to others to clean up after the trashers.

The issue is real and very disappointing indeed. I too had an issue with it in the past. I've sinced improved my seeding to ABC and now I don't see gu sachets any longer

Whats even worse for me is the amount of crap that is cast aside in areas that dont really see much traffic....people are actively seeking out dumping spots these days...

A couple of years back I went through a bag of trash that had been dumped in the middle of a mielie field in a fairly isolated spot....I found a school report with a kids name on it and recognised the surname (small town)...I got hold of the 'owner' who said the dump was closed (crap as there are no gates!) and then blamed it on his worker! I knew this was also crap as the owner was a keen off road biker and what was on the path....motorbike tyre tracks!

I don't know why we are now a nation that doesn't give a toss about rubbish (Or so it seems to me)  and where it ends up. I remember at school having to go around before school and at breaks picking up any rubbish (and there was seldom any), inside and around the school (and also bomb patrol!).  The guy who dumped that rubbish is my age and should have the same maturity and respect of the environment (being an off roader) as I have so why did he dump that rubbish? It was also some distance from where he lives and to top it all the local dump ( I mention again : no gates!) was a lot closer than the mielie field...!

But ja,  who knows, unfortunately the country, both urban and rural areas, does look like a never ending rubbish tip these days....

I always toss banana peels into the bush or grass. Never use Gu or any bars or stuff. But yip riding around PTA today the litter and junk around is amazing.

About time you stopped chucking your crap into the Bush or grass

Never ceased to amaze me a) how much effort people would put into dumping stuff literally miles from anywhere. It couldn't possibly be easier than going to the dump and b) how much confidence builders had repeatedly dumping their stuff on the verges of busy roads.
