[Event] Herald Cycle Tour 2019

What a kakka result after some highly questionable judgement applied by the race commissaire and his team.

Nolan clearly deviated from his racing line, elbows all over the place and interfered with Ryan's sprint.

Winning a race is hard enough.

how did you enjoy the race?

Followed PowerB's advice and was stuck to the front of the group like glue on the old Seaview road. Was caught napping after the long downhill on old Seaview and was too far back in the group to catch the breakaway on the Lakeside(?) climb, meh...

Then had a nice ride with a group of about 6 other dropped riders,  when we got to the sea I saw a small group up ahead - thought I would try and bridge the gap, ended up doing a 45km TT on my own (as I feared in my first post), but was fun averaging 40km/h with a strong tailwind! .

Just missed out on a Sub-3, it's a great ride, enjoyed the scenery. Very underrated race.

It's not often we get the full attention of local authorities with full road closures.  Yet for some reason this well organised well executed and enjoyable event seems to get less attention here than it deserves.  I know PE isn't the most glamorous destination in SA but it's an event well worth doing.  I took my Colnago Master out for it's longest run under my stewardship.  It clung onto the VA bunch for 20km and then suddenly the bike started going slower....here it is all cleaned up after but I couldn't find the problem

Just 2 general comments about the race.

Well organised, (Almost) full road closure, riding through the city, nice scenery and the long route only attracts only 800 entrants - it's because of stuff like  this that us roadies don't deserve to get nice things in life.... Saw a number of locals during and just after the race riding their bikes completely ignoring the event - seriously wtf fellow cyclist, if you can't make an effort to support the only big cycling event in your city then what are you training for?

How come organisers for an event for a few 100 riders in a city like Port Elizabeth can manage full road closure but for smaller towns like Stellenbosch, Paarl and Durbanville where up to 4K attend an event full road closure is just not an option? Even partial road closure on some of the back roads would be a start - but then, from the point above, if us riders can't be bothered to support events with full road closure then maybe we don't deserve better.

Huh?

I get your point, but not everyone wants to enter an event, they obviously have various reasons for not doing it.

Personally, I have 7 Heralds under my belt and no longer find it a challenge. To pay a couple of hundred Rands to do an event that I don't really want to do is just a waste of money.

I did go and support though. Watching from various spots.

Also, lots of people did the mtb last week.

Common themes on the hub are the lack of road events & lack of safety at road events and my post refers to that.

Great that the mtb is well supported, if few years down the line the Herald is a mtb-only event we can't wonder why or blame the organisers.

Maybe they are not training, just out enjoying riding their bikes.

Wow, looking at the video I think he is lucky to have gotten away with that one!

Um.... did I miss the video link somewhere?

Sigh - I see one observation completely sidetracked my whole argument.

City with only one big road event in a year yet a whole lot of local cyclists can't be bothered to enter and choose to go ride on their own. Whatever their reasons (and I'm sure they have great ones), it demonstrates how road cycling is slowly dying in our regions. Yeah, at least we can still go mtb'ing but I will miss the road events when they're gone.

Yeah Nolan not being cool at all.

Suppose when you get old you need to start relying on tricks to keep winning.

Nolan only started moving across once Ryan started coming around him. Its an old trick, an illegal one, but one that gets used often in the peloton.

I actually do see your point and I also feel for the race organizers as I know there is a heck of a lot of work involved in organizing a race like this. The fact is though that not everyone wants to "race". This year did see a growth of over 100 riders finishing the 106km though.

you pretty much described my race - I just got dropped earlier and took 25 minutes longer but got some great tips and help from 4 experienced guys who showed me how to ride in a small bunch,  But the last 40km was a complete solo TT with no water and no legs.
