ok so what I've learned from this:

*plan the route beforehand. Frail seemed to have done this, and had pre ridden it and calculated 22 laps. I dunno where the confusion came in.

*steeper hills are better. you reduce the rolling and wind resistance by riding less distance. an average gradient of 3.7% probably makes bainskloof a nice but not ideal choice.

*read the rules. Even if he had done 22, they still might not have accepted it. no smartphones (although some do have barometric alti) in them - my CAT does,

Recording the attempt

Accepted device to record attempt

– We only accept recordings from a dedicated GPS device which has an altimeter or barometer (i.e. not a Garmin Forerunner or smart phone)

*some people in the know appear to have it wrong. you don't have to complete a lap it seems:

Once the 8,848m is complete the current lap can be abandoned or completed at the rider’s discretion. The ride must be more than 8,848m on Strava so use a little bit of common sense and log some extra vertical metres just to be safe.

*Frail has gone through some tough times, but remains a MACHINE of note.

Been playing with the Everesting calculator since the skin vegetarian and Frail started talking about it. Have put in many many segments and still can't see a way that I would be in any position to complete anything close to 6000m, let alone the full 8800, unless I get some serious training in for a long long time. Giant Respect to those who complete it.

Most of them charge very quickly so can you not give it a quick charge while you rest? I've never tried but it might stop recording if you do that - just an idea.

Yes you can or you can use an external battery pack. However you need to use an onthego cable otherwise depending on the device it resets/save the activity when you plug the charger in.

Yeah, it does put it into perspective when you think of your local hill rep hill, and roughly work out how many times up that. And then roughly work out distance and time...off-putting at best!

One of the things I haven't got my head around is how would I achieve a reasonable VAM, so I wouldn't spend days and days riding, and stay out the red! Where does one buy a new physiology? Oh, yes, I just need the right gearing...

I really support what you do and always try to support you when I can, but that is the kind of thing you should have mentioned at the start...

Yeah man, keep it coming!! :D

And post some damn pics already, this is social media right?!

Two ISSUES with posting on BikeHub.

1. TIME TO UPLOAD. Way to Slow

2. PICTURES MUST FIRST BE EDITED.

Because there was Bad signal /No Signal on Baines Kloof. "I had to Post every time I reached the Bottom", sacrificing time just to type Lap and Timing.

I didn't have someone following me to take any pictures.

My Support was waiting at the Top with my fresh Drinks and Snacks.

                                       Ride Report.

My first attempt at cycling an Everest.
After arriving in Wellington with a friend we first secured my time board close to the start, at the side of the road. We then proceeded up to top of the climb, 12.3km of Baines Kloof pass.

I had selected to use the Picnic spot and Hiking trail parking area as my turn around point.

We then got my bike ready and made the final preparations.

I then took an easy cycle down to the bottom, to start my journey of hill repeats up the pass.

I Started at 12h30 on the 27th Saturday afternoon.

I settled into a riding style of 1hour to reach the summit and 20 odd minutes to get back down.
Throughout the afternoon the weather stayed warm with little to no wind.

I kept forcing myself to consume my energy drinks, protein shakes and water.

As the evening approached the temperature started to drop and the wind had picked up.
Once it got cooler i started to pull on my thermal shirts and shorts.

With 3 lights going on the bike, I was really lit up.
Around 01h00 it got very cold, so I put on my jacket and tights.
I just kept on going doing my hill repeats through the night.

As the morning progressed I was greeted by other cyclist out for a ride.
By 08h00 the temperature had skyrocketed again.
At about 10h00 fellow cyclists from City Cycling Club arrived to give me moral support.

On nearing 26h00 on the bike and completing 14 laps .
After a careful discussion about the calculations and elevation gained per lap, I got led to believe that I might have already ridden enough laps.

Thus my first attempt at Everesting had come to an end. I had reached 6453M.

I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE FOR THEIR SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT .
