Hi, what was the verdict for the total elevation gain of round 1?

But that is even more weight to lug up Everest ....

Would it be acceptable to use 2 different units?  Record with one while the other is on charge, swop out and your backup team loads to the cloud and charge again ....

I don't know. Have a look at the Everest website perhaps...

This may be a challenge in itself .... he would need a device with more than 24 hours battery life ...

Could look at one of the new Bryton or Lezyne GPS's? For example, the Lezyne mega XL claims up to 48 hours, that should be more than enough for any of the insanely impressive challenges Frail does (it is a bit bulky and not entirely cheap, of course).

I use the Lezyne Super - I got it for my Everest mainly for the 24hr claimed battery life.  In real life, I've had it recording for 25 hrs (not during Everest - that was a mere 22hrs) and still managed to upload when the ride was finished. Great little unit which has all the functionality you could want.

It also doesn't turn off when you plug a power bank into it like a Garmin does without the special cable.  This means I can plug in a little power bank (I use a Red-E Compace 5000mah since its small and does the job) without fear of losing my ride if needed.  This can just sit in a top tube bag for a lap or two and you'll be all set again.  I doubt it weighs more than 100g and you only need to carry it while you're charging so I highly doubt it would slow anyone down at all.

Garmin has a battery pack that fits on Garmin mount to provide charging while riding. The cheaper alternative is the cable hack with a standard powerbank. AFAIK it has to be recorded on one device as one ride. Using two devices will upload seperate activities.

carry a battery recharge pack like for the cellphones and recharge while riding

OK, so, after reading all this, I decided to NOT attempt it......PURELY because of my IT handicap.......NOTHING to do with my cycling abilities.......

ok so what I've learned from this:

*plan the route beforehand. Frail seemed to have done this, and had pre ridden it and calculated 22 laps. I dunno where the confusion came in.

*steeper hills are better. you reduce the rolling and wind resistance by riding less distance. an average gradient of 3.7% probably makes bainskloof a nice but not ideal choice.

*read the rules. Even if he had done 22, they still might not have accepted it. no smartphones (although some do have barometric alti) in them - my CAT does,

Recording the attempt

Accepted device to record attempt

– We only accept recordings from a dedicated GPS device which has an altimeter or barometer (i.e. not a Garmin Forerunner or smart phone)

*some people in the know appear to have it wrong. you don't have to complete a lap it seems:

Once the 8,848m is complete the current lap can be abandoned or completed at the rider’s discretion. The ride must be more than 8,848m on Strava so use a little bit of common sense and log some extra vertical metres just to be safe.

*Frail has gone through some tough times, but remains a MACHINE of note.

Been playing with the Everesting calculator since the skin vegetarian and Frail started talking about it. Have put in many many segments and still can't see a way that I would be in any position to complete anything close to 6000m, let alone the full 8800, unless I get some serious training in for a long long time. Giant Respect to those who complete it.

Most of them charge very quickly so can you not give it a quick charge while you rest? I've never tried but it might stop recording if you do that - just an idea.

Yes you can or you can use an external battery pack. However you need to use an onthego cable otherwise depending on the device it resets/save the activity when you plug the charger in.

Yeah, it does put it into perspective when you think of your local hill rep hill, and roughly work out how many times up that. And then roughly work out distance and time...off-putting at best!

One of the things I haven't got my head around is how would I achieve a reasonable VAM, so I wouldn't spend days and days riding, and stay out the red! Where does one buy a new physiology? Oh, yes, I just need the right gearing...
