this is not an article ...its an advert :whistling: think 27,5, think boost, think whatever other crap the industry has decided they can use to seperate you from your money ^_^

There are a lot of things I can see as being considered 'crap' but tubeless I wouldn't think was one of those? To my kind probably one of the best advances in bicycle 'technology' at least in my lifetime!

Thank you.

Nice comprehensive article for those new to the sport.

Along my commute I encounter LOTS of thorns !!  I simply cant do without the tire sealant.  Similar along the trails we ride.

That said, I have ridden hundreds of kilometers on the trails with tubes, that have sealant in it.  The trick being that some tubes allow you to remove the valve core, in order to top up the sealant.  With the 20'' and 24'' bikes we dont have any better solution, not yet - stuck with tubes on these bikes.  With my 29er I rode the first 700km with the tubes it was delivered with, then did the tubeless conversion.

WITH the tubes:

- I ran lower tire pressures

- The road noise (on tar to the trails) were softer

- .. heavier wheel weight ...

TUBELESS:

- I need to run about 0,4bar higher pressures !

- tire sound "hollow" when riding on tar ... weird sound at first

- lighter wheels...

I still carry a back-up tube .... but far prefer tubeless !!

meh...i run tubes in my tyres with sealent in them and haven't had a problem with punctures either, even running them at 1.5 bar, they work just as good for my riding as tubeless except for the little extra weight. I used to run tubeless but if you like swopping out tyres on your bike you probably need to invest in shares with a sealant company... and probably a second wheel set...because that sh!t is a royal mess every single time.

Both work fine...I use the one for convenience, and because i'm  not a little girl crying about an extra 500g of weight  :P

I do what I want

The combination of tubeless with proper tyres (decent sidewalls) is an improvement in terms of riding pleasure that I'll rank up there with dropper seatposts and disc brakes.

I didn't understand why road riders get so many punctures, but then I realized that they are still running tubes.

Saw a young racer this morning that WISHED he followed this route ....

Debeaded his tire in the practice rounds .... then found the valve core was clogged .... was quick to fit a new valve core. ..... finding somebody trail side that could bead the tire was a different issue .... even a gas bomb was useless.

I get the tire change it is a bit messy, but do it enough times and it get much easier. As for the sealant just use a big syringe to suck it up and reuse.

Been riding tubeless for about 5 of the 6 years I have been cycling and have never needed a tube, running 1-1.5bar pressure.

rode the yzerfontein cycle experience with the wife yesterday. 52km gravel ride basically,,,but really n nice ride.

Forgot my gloves in the car and only realised on the start line just before we got going....and since the wife is not riding for any sort of time (to my immense frustration i'll admit), and the route went past where my car was parked,...I quickly made a detour,  fetched my gloves and went on my merry lonesome catching up to the back of the field (had to pass the support bakkie haha)...the wife was not far off the end of the field anyway and thats where we cruised the whole day   .

anyway...on my way, only 4/5km in....I rode past (and asked if all was good of course ^_^ ) the first guy who burped a tire on the lip of the tar/shoulder..busy putting in a tube at his 'dismay'.

Ugh tubes...gross right?

At about 15km, while literally crawling along in the wifes new 46T GREAT-Granny™ gear :cursing: , also watching her fall in the sand every second time (first race in cleats), we passed the second guy who burped/damaged a tire in a rut who I presume had no tube and was maybe too proud to ask?..dunno.

2 minutes later they came past us on the quad bike... his expensive dual-sus bike on the back, while fiercely trying to minimise the amount his frame was getting beaten senseless against the steel rack it was loosely dangling from lol.

there were no thorns on this ride for us...so i think maybe those guys were just  running their tires way too soft - because reasons

agian, we can all do what we like. I choose not to bother with tubeless for convenience.  I just don't want to worry about that crap anymore, it is NOT set and forget. All of course while going way to slow and laughing at my woman while she forgets her feet are now stuck to the pedals

Huh!? I thought tubes on an mtb died a very quick death more than 5 years ago. Why would anyone willingly still have tubes in their tyres?

It's as dead as swapping out training and racings tyres is, so not at all.

also as morne said twice, convenience of reliability - if I replace or patch a tube I know roughly how long it'll take before being back in the race, but with tubeless, sounds like a gamble with zero guarantee
