As much as I'd be Effing GUTTED I will have to understand that this is not about me and my selfish needs about ticking off one of my goals.

To an extent I've enjoyed training I've enjoyed laughing at the fact that I can smash out long swims, long rides and big runs but there are bigger things at stake here.

If it gets postponed I'll accept it... I better message my acommodation folks cause I've wacked out a deposit :-(

As for the training, I'll take a week or three off and find a more advanced training program.

To the other physco's out there that have sweated it out, we will get our race. Enjoy what you've achieved so far in fitness, take the oppurtunity to get faster and fitter!

Dadbod Out....

Agree with this completely. I've gained more from this experience than just the participation on race day and I've enjoyed the process. Always room for improvement, so will be better prepared if postponed!

I sincerely hope it is not cancelled or postponed. One works to a goal and the goal was 29 MArch 2020. To not have an opportunity to realise that goal will be a pschological knock i reckon.

But , I guess one has to be safe. Just cancel the mass gatherings like the awards and pasta evening but let the event run.Ppl are over reacting to this thing. Maybe time ot start selling balance bracelets again to restore sanity.

Good day all, I am attempting my first IM this year and have 2 questions:

1. What does one put in your special needs bags (both run and bike)

2. How is the visibility when on the run at night? Should I have a head light or just suck it up?

Thanks.

As ICM says, special needs bags for the cycle is not generally needed unless you want to put a bottle or your own drink in it and perhaps a spare tube.  There are mechanics on motorbikes as well as 2 technical tents on course, so if you need replacement tubes you can get or stop at one of the technical tents and get the mechanics to help with such things as loose handle bars, gear shifting issues etc.  I have never had to stop for the bike special needs bag.

Run special needs bag is more important, especially if you think/know you will be running once the sun goes down.  You are tired after a long day racing and baked in the sun, the wind usually picks up once the sun goes down and can get cold, so a long sleeve jersey or old arm warmers, perhaps some salt tablets and pain killers.

No need for a headlamp, the street lighting and building lighting is sufficient.

Just remember, whatever you put in the special needs bags you DO NOT get back after the race, so don't go putting expensive rain jackets or cycling/running kit in them.

The run bag I generally put in an old t-shirt and some long rugby socks (you can get at Sportsmans warehouse cheap  If you cut the toe off the socks, you have cheap arm warmers rather than loosing expensive cycling ones if you do not use.

No need for a headlight. The streets are lit anyway. They will hand out lil straw lights to put around yr neck so u can be seen. Worry not bout lighting.

As to bags. In my bike bag I usually put a spare tube an bomb an a gel. I have never stopped to collect it though as have never had a puncture. In my run bag I always put a long sleeve t shirt an a chocolate. Have collected my run bag as it sometimes gets a bit chilly.

Just remember whatever you put in the bag if you do not collect it you lose it. So no valuables etc.

Unless there is load shedding.

With the Ironman African Championship and Splash Festival just around the corner, Nelson Mandela Bay is turning to the national health department — in the face of the global coronavirus crisis — for guidance on how to deal with these major events.

This as the Covid-19 virus is also set to scupper the Isuzu Southern Kings’ next away match against Italian side Zebre.

I've heard that the Pro14 has been canned for the rest of the season. Saves the Kings another 8 losses.
