Hi hubbers,

Anyone all of a sudden been spammed by Cyclelab with SMS and emails?

I have never signed up for any cycle lab newsletter or handed over my details.

Do you think they have just taken the CWC database list of all people they have details for?

Thoughts?

Yip, got the email about a fun ride in Tokai tomorrow morning.

Probably did take the CWC DB how else would they get my digits....

If they spam me more I'll just unsubscribe like I did earlier this year. Unsubscribed from everything I signed up for, don't care if I miss a deal. If I need something I'll go out and look. I'm done with stuff, can't be bothered with stuff anymore!

I agree and that seems like a plausible explanation. Thus and spam is general has really increased the past 2 years - sign of tough times I guess.

Any tech boffs with ideas to extract oneself from this.

Yip, got one yesterday. As useful to me as the CWC sms'es I got a while back, for in-store only specials - nah, not going to drive down to Cape Town for a GP4000, no matter how good the price.

Close to impossible in my opinion. And little you can do when you they carry on after you’ve asked to STOP.

I while back, I took out a new cell number, but kept the old one on a R15 per month pay as you go. I also created a email account on gmail. I kept that phone at home as like an “old telkom” phone, emergency backup. Then I never give out my new mobile and email, to any business or website but I’d give them the old combination. Then, I’d check the old phone at home once a day kinda thing or when needed.

A bit of a shlep but it worked pretty well.

And I thought I was special. LOL

For those that are interested, I see that the "Safe Road Ride" has been postponed to Sat 27th.

Well Cycle Lab own CWC so it is their data to use as they please, Not so? I think CWC is branded as Cyle Lab in any event these days.

It depends on the wording of the "opt-in" marketing clause.

Guess it is a two sided coin type conundrum ....

Basic business to send information of specials to your client base (and we know that CWC and CycleLab is one company).   That said, YES, any decent marketing campaign SHOULD be clear and accurate in its "opt-out / un-subscribe" methods.

Rides .... hey, can hardly fault a shop for actively taking part in that which it sells.  Was in CWC last Saturday, And Steven invited me to join their Saturday morning rides.  Complete with a back-up/recovery/sweeper vehicle.

Sending an email/SMS to their client base inviting them to join such a ride makes perfect sense ... both in terms of the sport and good business.  Once again, any decent marketing campaign SHOULD be clear and accurate in its "opt-out / un-subscribe" methods.

As long as they are clear and accurate in allowing people to unsubscribe, then surely this communication is a win-win for shop and client.

Disclaimer - I am super positive about CWC after my experience this week.  And those that know me I have also been vocal on those ocations they dropped the ball ....  Here's hoping I am equally positive about their communication technology if I do decide to opt out ....

But are they members of the direct marketing association?

I don't think they are allowed to send unsolicited marketing?
