Silverback warranty

Silverback replaced my frame without claiming on warranty. There were a few issues with the model I had and when I took it in for service the LBS arranged for the swap unbeknownst to me. Imagine my surprise when i get a call to collect my "serviced" bike then get given it back with a new frame.

Probably some sort of recall.............

A friend had a similar thing happen with Raleigh. Except he wasn't happy at all. He bought the bike initially because he liked the frame design and the colour. It was replaced with a completely new design and colour which he didn't like.

He sold the bike with the new frame and bought another brand.

I dont think you should have to pay anything in for the frame, they need to replace the frame under the warranty at no cost to you. If they have stopped making it, they made that decision knowing about the warranties.

If they get you a new frame and parts dont fit, then its fair you cover these costs.

I disagree. If they get you a new frame and parts don't fit, it is not fair for you to cover the costs. They must cover the costs too. It's their product that failed, it did not last as long as they promised it would.

oh ja THAT thread. Forgot about that one lol. Lack of Pictjas and the presumed legal gag made everyone lose interest

Similar sentiment as most people here I think..... 8k is a great price for the upgrade, but they should at offer a "no/low cost" option as well. You really shouldn't have to cough R8k because they can't honour their warranty.

What year was your Sido?

Sesta will use your own parts but leave you with a lot better bike, where as a Stratos AL will leave you needing new parts to suit.

I would suggest asking if there's alternative options if you are not happy with the proposed offer, and to give them the opportunity to respond (If you have not yet). A good idea at least before the BH pitchfork brigade comes out with torches blazing.

I always advocate a polite, measured approach.

Silverback are generally pretty good at looking after their clients, so I am certain the right words with the right attitude will get you far better results than 'hard nosed' or 'high line' option.

Chat to them about what parts you have, what compatibility there is etc.... You may even find Tom is willing to build the bike across for you gratis.

8k is a lot. It would be a good deal if your frame wasn't a warranty claim, but if it IS a direct warranty frame and not a kind, out of warranty offer, they shouldn't charge you.

Hi guys

I am looking for your advice. I have a Silverback Sido 1 mtb. During a race this last weekend the frame cracked near the seatpost weld. I reported it to silverback with fotos and invoice and within a day they got back to me and assured me it wil be replaced as a warranty claim. There was however a catch, the Sido which is a aluminium frame is out of circulation and they offered me a carbon upgrade ( sesta pro) with rebuilt for R8000-00 .

In my mind I jump at the offer as I know that the Sesta frame retails for R22000 roughly but then a LBS friend of mine said that the fact that Silverback cant honour the Sido warranty is not my problem and they must give me a better deal on the Sesta as that to is going out of circulation.

I am really impressed with the communication from SB and their quick response and trust their support wrt warranties in the future.

What is your thoughts? Is it a good deal or am I being blinded because suddenly I am unsure.

Thanks

upgrade from alu to carbon, is not as much a big deal for a duallie as it is for a hardtail (imho), But if you sold your alu frame secondhand and bought a new carbon one it would cost you way more than R8k in the end.

I find it hard to believe that they don't have an equivalent alu frame available, especially if your bike is a recent model. BUT i guess they don't really sell frame only option so this could well just be their modus operandi(to hold low stock on frames, and sort out the issues case by case when they happen).

I guess they're reading this...i reckon go with your gut, if that sesta pro makes your googlies go gnagly then go for it.

Thanks for everybody's input. I am going to take the offer as it includes the rebuild and new seatpost. My old frame was due for pivot replacement so if I add everything up the actual cost for the frame is small.

you did the correct thing. Guys on here going on about the parts, the parts did not fail the frame did and that's what's under warranty. They are willing to upgrade you and do the build over at a reasonable price(where they just could have sent you a new frame and left you to sort it out). You could maybe ask nicely for some discount I would but that's because I never want to pay full price for anything???? and on the aluminum to carbon change is a huge upgrade, the ride quality of carbon is way better than aluminium. Lots of people only look at the weight difference but that's not the only reason carbon is better. Never mind the better geometry of the Sesta compared to the Sido.

Technically your friend is right, but warranties aren't all that enforcable (legally). It's a good deal. Personally I'd take it and not look a gift horse in the mouth.

Edit: I see you already took the deal. Good choice :)

I'm with Savage on this one - R8k is a lot of money to fork out because the product failed. I agree that if your bike had non-boost versus the latest and greatest frame now has boost then you may need to upgrade some parts.

With that being said this is what I would do:

  • Negotiate a deal on the new frame - lower than the R8k starting point.
  • Get the new frame
  • List the new frame at a profit
  • Get another frame on here .
That way you make moola and get a new frame :whistling:

So you would sell a new frame that you got for a bargain, to buy an unknown second hand entity with no warranty? No thanx, I’d stick with the new bargain...
