Throwback Thursday...... When We Were Young

Me racing at Midmar dam for Natal team selection for Interprovs and Eric van Enter 1991.

I still have the Hansom with the original 105 that I restored a while back (second image)

I remember this race! Was my first race ever and I won the U15, much to the dismay of the late Johann van Niekerk.

I also remember that white and grey Hansom of yours, if I am not mistaken it was Reynolds 525.

I rode Eric van Enter in 92 or 93, can’t remember. It was at Hilton. I too still have the Hansom from then, got her resprayed and fitted new groupset and wheels, she is my only road bike. Good memories of that van Enter, it was a blast.

It was in Howick and the year was 1993. I managed to win the 1km hillclimb up the Curry's Post road in the U17 category, a guy called David George came second. DG won the road race, though - I was 4th, with aforementioned Johann van Niekerk taking 3rd for the Natal team. I have a few photos from that race somewhere. Well I hope I do, be a shame if I've lost them,

'92 was in howick area. I was too old to ride by that stage so mashalled and my younger brother road that year.

I rode' 91 in Gariep dam(new name) Colesburg area. Good memories for sure, super aggressive and hard racing.

That Gariep one freaked me out, it was so COLD, I remember doing the TTT and we didn't even have arm warmers or gloves or anything, with frost on the road (there was ice on the hillclimb). There were a ton of serious crashes in the U17s, I remember the 'wounded' coming in on kombis, lost my nerve before the start of the U15 RR, ended up giving my bike to Mike Nefdt because he had a mechanical and I was messing around at the back anyway...ah memories aye!!

This one is from the 1993 (or maybe '94) Kokstad Tour. I'm the gimp in the Jowett's shirt, a few other faces there might be recognisable.

Geez Don that's going back some hey. Cool you still have the pictures.

Remember that so well. Accident was just after the turn on the way back. A few guys on carbon Alan's snapped frames in half, your brother and I watched it all go down.

Yes I recall you have your bike to Michael Neft.

The last Eric van Enter I rode... First was in Cape Town the year before. The one in Potch we all wondered where will they find a hill for the hill climb, ended up climbing the hill to the radio tower. I seem to remember the antics in the school dorm where we stayed better than the actual racing...

I still have those same silver/grey S-Works shoes, wore them yesterday for a 5 hour ride in the hills above Opotiki!

....and, come to think of it, still have the same XTR pedals! Been on at least 6 or 7 different bikes now.
