My fellow inmates,

Does anybody else think it's in rather poor tastes to be receiving Early Bird eantry requests in these rather testing times?

I think the Comms' machine of Tankwa Trek, TransCape and Cycle Events should be a little more sensitive to our current situation in the country.

Or maybe it is just me!

Stay safe and stay at home....

I fully agree and I was thinking the exact same thing when I was invited via a Facebook contact to "Pre-Register" (that's seemingly the industry word for pay now, wait later) for a, wait for it, "Corona After Party" (see http://www.coronaafterparty.co.za).

The event is described as follows: "Our artists, musicians, venues and technical industries have all been affected and in light of this situation, it was decided to establish the Corona After Party in aid of the events industry".

Now this part really got to me: "The music concert will be hosted at major venues able to accommodate mass amounts of people around our provinces." Not only do I find it in poor taste to be organizing an after party for a worldwide human tragedy in the middle of a worldwide human tragedy, but I'm wondering on which planet these okes live. It will not be months, if years until we see mass gatherings in mass gathering venues at various localities again and expecting large crowds to be converging post-pandemic is opportunistic and a pipe dream.

I do get that the entertainment industry must be crunching hard now but this kinda thing doesn't sit well with me.

got the tankwa email and thought the same.

in their defence they probably had it in their schedule to open it the week after epic finishes and justs tuck with that

and obviously it is a cashflow source that they would be missing.

the middle ground could have been a better idea.

make it abundantly clear that you as organisers realise that people do not want to be shelling out cash right now, but here is a limited early bird entry offer of race entry at eg.30% discount. this is for the people who want to support the event in these rough times (almost like a kickstarter).

I got an email from Karoo to Coast yesterday stating that planning for the race is going ahead, but final decisions will be taken by the 15th of July whether the race continues as expected. But then also saying that if the race is postponed to '21, then entrants can opt for a full refund (less admin costs), or they can carry entries over to next year. "But folks, please enter none the less, because it's all for a good cause..."

Now, I know the race is a charity event, but I am just not comfortable with parting with so much cash (it's not just entry fee, it's also fuel and accommodation costs etc.) Now, if you enter the race, you need to book accommodation, and even if you get a refund if the race is cancelled, you are not guaranteed to get a refund from the guest house, B&B etc...

Methinks 2020 edition of K2C is going to see record low entries, since as it stands according to the mail, only a 1000 entries were made to date. This event usually sold out in a matter of days / weeks.

And to be really sad - not many riders will have employment to pay for said events. Even if they offer a discount.

How many folk will be holding on really tight to their money after this?

I was thinking of doing the shova, the entry fee is one thing, but then the travel to get to the event is a whole bang shoot. And this applies to all the events.

So until I have some idea of what the income into the family is going to be, I will be cycling a few routes on the IDT and then most of the road and tracks around our neighborhood.

Absolutely, the world as we know it and the people living in it will not be quite the same after this. I think event coordinators will have to face the harsh reality that a mind-shift will undoubtedly follow the wave of this pandemic. In my opinion, after the spike people will:

- think twice before congregating in large masses

- think twice before spending money on "non-essential" services

- rethink their savings strategies

- think twice before traveling to regions which might be a health risk

- think twice before sleeping over at establishments which might be health risk

- think twice before pushing their own health thresholds in the red to be super fit

The list goes on and I think this mindset will last for a long time.

Perhaps I'm wrong, dunno.

2 of my clients put on a lot of running events (they do themed runs, spar ladies runs, marathons etc).   They had been working on events for the government and had a meeting to see what the thoughts were from that side. Obviously when this clears up everyone who has an event / has postponed a event will be scrambling for the limited dates available in the calendar so were trying to get the inside line.

Their outcomes of the meeting was pretty bleak. Lockdown would be extended in some form based on spread and that the infection spike is still considered a long way off. Their belief was that the idea of holding any kind of mass participation event can't be considered as feasible until late August / September.
