Which group set is better.....How long is the proverbial ball of string?

Personally I would stick with shimano and mechanical

Currently I have shimano ultegra (yeah yeah roadie) electrical on 2 of my road bikes, they work flawlessly. My mtb 2019 EVO has sram 1 x12 mechanical and there is always some noise from chain rub in certain gears..... the amount of times I have to try adjust it out while riding... snagged this with my lbs when the bike went for its first service and they said (with an embarrassed see you soon again look that it’s been adjusted).

Did I mention my previous mtb’s all had shimano xtr and never suffered this problem (ok they were old school 3x systems)

Based on my current experience I will not ever buy any sram drive chain product if I can help it. Busy saving up for a new shimano XT groupset on my EVO

Sorry for the somewhat anecdotal non electrical x01 or xtr 9100 related comments, however I believe they are related.... same wolf in sheep’s clothing

Agree 100% with your comments on SRAM GX ... had it on two bikes ....

All my bikes now run XT 11 speed. What an absolute pleasure. :)

If you have the cash, go AXS. There simply isn’t a better group set on the market. You’ll get way more mileage out of a SRAM system vs shimano. The limp mode on the derailleur, if it gets a knock, will probably also save a your hanger.

I’ve personally been riding the system since lockdown and I won’t ever go back to mechanical. Never lost a battery, it’s secure in there. If someone has lost a battery, they clearly didn’t fit it properly.

The batteries do not fall off - anyone’s that has is or has a bad mechanic. It’s been tried and tested by top tier racers who often have 2 batteries that both stay on (dropper)

I have it on my mtb and gravel bike - it’s hellishly expensive but it’s unrivaled and it’s not going to fall off, that’s just nonsense

Not nonsense but fact - I cannot comment how or who fitted the batteries previously. I just state the fact that I have one friend that just stripped off his AXS in Feb and refitted XX1 mechanical because of losing the battery on the RD and then the service crew I knew that had to go do emergency stock runs go get multiple guys new RD batteries at a stage race so guys could continue riding the next day.

You state your facts and I state mine. we call it getting as much information out there so someone else can go make their own decision on what to spend their money on.

But your evidence is anecdotal, you can’t personally speak to riding with a battery that fell off - your friend lost his so you don’t know who

fitted it - I actually have it on my bike and it’s going nowhere

But not nonsense as you stated. Actual fact and he fitted the battery himself a few times also. As he had a few he would swop between as he had some spare for backup. I am not arguing that your battery has fallen off or is about to but only reporting the actual events and reports. I personally have ridden every version of XT and Xtr INCL Di2 since 9speed without ever having any mechanicals WHATSOEVER. So from that I can say that I have not had any wear issues or other that others have reported. It does not however invalidate their experiences or reports. And let me tell you having to get the particular buddy to the end of a 80km stage with 28km to go I personally IMO would not buy AXS if I had the money... and to replace batteries endlessly as that is my experiences. You have your opinion I have mine.

XO1 AXS if you can afford it.

XO1 Mechanical if you can't

either way its going to outlast XTR by a long way.

11000km on the bike in 2 years, onto my third XX1 chain. Previous XX1 chain was fitted last year September. Approximately 6000km out of the first one, I replaced the previous one as a precaution at 0.25% wear (4800km) and I'm not too religious about chain cleaning

I wish I could get mileage like that out of my xx1 chains. 2000km and they are toast. The only gripe I have with Eagle is the ridiculous 42 to 50 jump... zero thought put into engineering better ratios. Shimano has fixed that but then stuffed up with micro spline.

My bike came with xx1 and I have had no issues with the reliability of the shifting. Brakes on the other hand...

So what happens you are 80km into it race, 28km to go and snap, there goes your buddy’s shifter cable. You still got to get him back.

Mechanical is not fool proof either, so you argument here seems pointless

I really don't think micro spline is A stuff up , its the evolution of drivetrains to get better

did you say the same when Xd drive came out ?

Maybe its teething but micro spline and XD will be dead normal in A few years , if XD isn't already

I don't do anything special. I clean the clean every week and lube with my home made lube.

I change gears all the time so the chains coating gets scuffed off after about 2000-3000km but the chain still has a lot of life left in it by then.

I know of guys getting up to 10,000km with more attention to chain cleanliness.

The brakes need servicing every year. Stick to that interval and they return the favour with reliable service

Nope I completely understood why XD was necessary. I was just praying that Shimano would find a way to adopt XD or allow one to retain the 11 speed free body.

Microspline was a mess when launched because there was no third party support.

Please DM me details of the brake servicig required. I think my current set are alright and want to try and keep them happy. My other failures have all been factory issues that are well documented online.
