Underslung tool bottle holder question?

my KTM Prowler only has space for one bottle holder but does have the bolts for another bottle cage under the down tube.

 

When I hold the cage in place it looks very exposed although there are no signs of previous damage to that bottom face (which does have a hard plastic protection cover) 

 

I don't see many bikes with anything mounted in this position and am wondering why.

Probably because it leaves it so exposed.

Good spot for a tool bottle. Not so good for a water bottle.

Possibly see it used more in touring scenarios.

It doesn't seem practical other than for storage.

Retrieving a water bottle on the go probably isn't recommended, and I doubt one would want to drink directly from a bottle mounted there anyway.

I should have mentioned that the plan is just for the tool bottle, not a second water bottle.

I have used on mtb for my second water bottle

 

It works well but the lid does get covered in mud and you cant grab it on the go

 

I used to drink from my main bottle and when i ran out, i stopped and poured the water from the second bottle (under the downtube) into my main bottle

Tool bag and a strap mounted elsewhere on the bike like top tube would be better.

 

Those underbelly solutions aren’t great when things get rough.

 

Also.... what tools do you want to carry?

Not a KTM, but it's a permanent fixture on my bike, never snagged on anything I ride. I've also used the XL tool bottles for long rides and sometimes a bottle just for refilling my main bottle.

So I took the plunge and installed the tool bottle cage to the underside of the down tube.

 

Just back from a 35km ride and it seems to have survived well.

 

Will take some proper rough stuff to worry it I think?

You can always take some rings cut out of mtb tubes, or just plain elastic bands... Then you loop them round the back of the cage and the top or depressed ring in the bottle... Will keep it in line when things get proper rough... We used to do this on the road bikes, specifically for the Lions race in krugersdorp that goes over the rumble strips.....

A riding mate used to keep his second bottle under the down tube. he would put cling-rap or a plastic bag with an elastic band over the top, when he first bottle was finished he would swap bottles and take the rapping off and drink up.

Probably not the most sustainable solution, but I guess he didn't have many other convenient options
