On route Support and Feeding

It is Vital to note the following:

No Support or feeding from outside is allowed for any competitor, this applies to the S.A Champs Categories as well. This instruction if from Cycling South Africa and due to Covid. Competitors need to use race waterpoints or carry their own food and drinks. Competitors also need to ensure they have the necessary supplies to attend to any technical issues on route themselves.

Emergency and pick up

Due to the vast amount of Single track and varied terrain it is going to be very

Difficult to get to certain places , so it is vital that you take extreme caution on the single track and at obstacles , there are a number of places on route that have erosion , loose sand and rocks . so be aware . If you have an EMERGENCY please activate your MY SOS on your phone ( you will receive the link in the week ) and this will send your location to our medical staff . There is also an emergency number you can contact 0828084109

IF you have a technical , you are tired or just don’t want to continue PLEASE DO NOT activate the emergency , it is up to you to stay on the route and make your way to the next waterpoint where you can either call someone to collect you , or wait for a sweep vehicle . Important to note that the sweep vehicle might take a long time to arrive so please be patient . our priority is safety on route and that comes 1st .

Cut Off Times and Points

Due to the terrain and varied start times we will strictly have to enforce Cut Off times on all distances. these Cut Off times need to be adhered to, if you continue after the cut off you will be DQ and will not receive any support from the event.

·      Cut Off 1 : Specialized Paarl – 12:00pm

·      Cut Off 2 : In the Reserve WP4 at 85/60/40km Split – 12:30pm

Hi

I am relatively nee to MTB and haven’t done any MTB races and have not ridden any of the Paarl trails. Could you please advise on the level of skills required to ride these trails (ie how technically challenging are they)?

As a reference point on my level of skills, I have ridden most of the Tokai trails except the DH routes without any major issues. Would this race be a suitable one to do my first race on? I am not worried from a fitness point of view, but rather that the trails are too technical/difficult/dangerous for a rider with my level of skills to undertake.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Michael

If you can ride Tokai you will be fine in Paarl. Just bring your climbing legs.

its technical in some sections, as a newbie I wouldn’t take it on but if you say you’ve ridden all of Tokai except the DH lines then you should be fine assuming you did all the snake trails from the top all the way to the bottom, cobra, mamba, etc?? Have you done Donkey Trail down, if yes to the above then you should be fine. Edited by milky4130

Thanks for the replies.

I have ridden Donkey and all the Snakes quite a few times. I have also done one or two of the DH sections, but not often enough to say I am comfortable on them.

I will need to think carefully if I take it on or not.

number collection on Thursday and Friday is pretty crap. SOme of us work and getting out all the way to Paarl ( an hour drive away) and back the next day is pretty unreasonable

I registered for the event last night before seeing your message, and reading online that entries need to be collected in Paarl. There is no way I am driving 2+ hours to Paarl and back on Thur/Fri to collect my entry, and then drive back there early Sat morning to ride.

It is unfortunate, as it would have been an enjoyable ride. Pity the organisers couldn't have made it a little more user friendly...

I’m sure yoûll be able to collect on the day, 99% of the riders won’t want to do the trip the day before that’s just retarded

Ja, I was hoping that would be the case, but it says on the blurb:

"Number Collection

Entries are only going to be accepted online and there will not be any late entries available. Number collection will be held at the Specialized-Paarl Store (Pieter Hugo St, Courtai, Paarl) on Thursday 29 April (10:00am – 17:00pm) and Friday 30 April (10:00am – 18:00pm). No number collection or substitutions on the day of the event. "

Would be good if anyone could confirm that number collections on the day of the race (Saturday) will be allowed
