947 Ride Joburg

Recommended Posts

Had a really good day out, I thought I would follow Google maps to Nasrec, that was a big mistake, but, it was my own fault for not checking the email with directions properly, lesson learned.

Still just managed to get there in time to make my start batch, and had a lekker ride, really pleased with my result, and I think I will be back next year.????

It seems the official times are still tbc - mine changed by 11 minutes over night.

Does anyone know what happens to all the ones that (probably accidentally) took the wrong Kyalami turn? I thought the system wouldn't notice as they went in and out correctly, there are tons of people without a "Kyalami Time" in the results though. Was there a timing station they missed somewhere on the race track?

how do you take a wrong turn on kyalami ? or did they skip the track completely ?

My time has stayed the same over night, but I see I've slipped back in overall standings.

Also see some people have batch positions but mine is still blank.

Anyone else find the route lacklustre?

its all highway riding in the crappiest of places in JHB.

i'll admit i enjoyed the race track part - felt like i was competing in a crit

but the rest was just so meh.

the organisers really have so much they could offer to show off JHB and yet they choose to show off the highway. i think if they rename the race and drop the "ride jhb" part it would be more apt. i get they have issues with what roads they can close, but come on. that way an enormously boring route.

By way of comparison, think back to how awesome the initial 94.7 routes were

I honestly also don't know how they did it. I chatted to a guy later in the race that was worried getting disqualified cause he had followed some guys and only later realised it was a wrong route. It's +/- 1/2 the official loop. When I watched my FlyBy on Strava I saw that it was a lot of people that did it. I posted a screenshot a bit earlier.

Brilliant event! Parking was easy.

I was seeded in VA but decided to drop and ride with A batch. I see in the results they have assumed I started with VA and thus an extra 40mins on my actual time.

Anybody have a similar results difference when dropping back into another batch?

I received the below message if anybody has timing result queries.

For results queries, you can contact finishtime: https://finishtime.co.za/contact-us/

I'm assuming the timing is based on when the gun goes, and not when you actually pass over the timing mat/ sensors?

My time listed is 4 min longer than I measured on my Garmin which I started and stopped as I passed over the mat.

Seems time starts after the neutral zone.

Out of Habit, I always start my Garmin on the Gun. That way I have my worst possible time on my head unit. For example: if I'm chasing a Sub 3 and it shows a 2h59:55 on my head unit I can be pretty sure it is not worse than that.

This is what happened to a lot of people, and I assume if they are going to be consistent they all should be disqualified like Emma was?

Correct. Gun-to-Mat

The start time was taken after the neutral zone, thus not gun to mat.....they stated this in the preview video the week before the race and it reflects in my result too.

it seems there have been different interpretations on how to ride Kyalami ???? ????‍♂️

So am I understanding this correctly, some people did a u turn getting onto the track and skipped the u-turn climb totally? Some of the most fun was coming down an open track after that climb.

That is a shocker from the lead car. The cone that prevents the car from turning left thru the gate doesn't help at all.

Here you can see she second-guesses what was going on. But what do you do as a rider, ignore the lead car?

Oh wow. This is so terrible for her, I wasn't aware. She just followed the car, how could she have known?
Same probably counts for all the other guys.
How did they not make the actual route more clear after this had happened with Emma?

Question is, how would FinishTime know, cause there is no video footage of the others that went that way....
