Cavendish and Caleb Ewan dropped out the bunch on the CAT 2 climb in the middle of the stage. The other teams are keeping the pace high to keep them out of contention.

Likely sprinters to benefit at the finish line:

-Girmay

-MvdP

-Demare

-Gaviria

In that order ;)

i must say, i did chuckle more loudly than appropriate at that first line. seems Alpecin's plan was to shell non-climbing sprinters and put the hammer down.

Let's see what the sprint holds. will be fascinating. Seems it's a bit downhill to the last 500m, so it's gonna be fastfastfast. on paper, that favours Demare, ahead of Gaviria, Girmay is going to need his stars to align I think, but wouldn't it be awesome if that happened! As for MVDP, his long sprint may be his secret weapon.

But for now, my biggest issue is to mute a Teams meeting while I let Rob Hatch off the leash!

Good call.

Girmay hardly even sprinted after barrier surfing and still ended 5th... Pity

Stage 6 today, and one that will see 0% chance for a breakaway win. it'll be a fast finish with all the leadout trains at full steam with some stowaway passengers hoping for a free ride, but rail conductors will say 'no!'

Expect someone to add to their tally of Giro sprint wins = Cav, Demare, Ewan... that Cav has Morkov to lead him out gives him the edge I think. Ewan with his uncanny abilities is 2nd favourite in my view. Unless Demare finds a vein of good fortune, I wouldn't back him for today.

Look for one of those photo-finish-photos with weird spokes. Love it!

It's still early days.... We will see who is targeting what by this time next week I guess.

Girmay certainly has some fantastic form at the moment. I'm really really hoping he gets a stage win.

I'm expecting Cav to take this one today. Unless they completely mess it up I think QS have too much firepower.

But luckily in cycling, we are often surprised!

Agree 100% on all points.

Stage finish is straight without much deviation. Going to be a pure battle of the Sprint trains.

Final kilometres
The route enters urban Scalea for the stage finale, which is raced on wide, straight and well-paved roads, with one last roundabout at the ‑3 km mark. The home straight is on tarmac road.

Unfortunately, I think Girmay needs to play his cards clever and just shadow Cav'. That DQS train is going to be tough to beat. Sit on his wheel and hope for a mistake/miscalculation.

Pity MvdP is not chasing the jersey???

Would be interesting to know what his exact plan is for the year.

He might be doing the Giro with some stage wins and those first days in Pink as his goals. He might then pull the plug in the 2nd or 3rd week to go recover and start his prep for TDF.

If he goes too deep in chasing the Points jersey here, it might scupper any TDF ambitions he might have. Winning Green in Paris is arguably one of the biggest achievements he can add to his current long list...

he's enigmatic at times. Alpecin's sprinter went home, leaving 'only' MVDP as a hopeful for them. Perhaps they value a stage win over a fleeting jersey? toe-to-toe, he's not beating any of the proper sprinters in a routine sprint stage, but when it's a sprint, and the regular sprinters can't get themselves up there, he shines brighter than anyone... Girmay seems to be the only one that can match him in those cases,

what happened to VDP yesterday? finished way down in the main bunch after being up there.

vdp sat up with about 500m to go.

3 weeks is a looong race, perhaps he is playing the long game for the jersey.  I hope so!!!
