DSTV vs Streaming to watch cycling

Just for info - use it don't use it.

1. Subscribed to NordVPN . Just got charged $93 for 28 months.  About 60 bucks a month.  Very very easy.

2. Created a "dummy" gmail account and entered all details UK based. Very very easy

3. On my Android TV Box simply signed in with this UK gmail user. Very very easy

4. On my Android box installed NordVPN App and logged onto UK server. Very very easy

5. Android TV Box immediately assumed I am UK based and viola the Discovery+ App was available to download from Google App store. Very very easy

6.  Subscribed to Discovery+ via the web. Very very easy.

7. Arranged with a friend in the UK to log in using my Discovery+ credentials and subscribed to Discovery+ with her UK Credit Card. About 7 Pounds/month.  Not so easy - as one need a friend with a UK Card willing to do this.

8. Use whatever means there is to transfer 7 Pounds from your account to friend's UK account. Very very easy but be clever about it as international SWIFT fees could be expensive. Pay your friend a year in advance and only pay one SWIFT transfer fee.

9. On Android Box where Discovery+ is installed, you are signed in with your Google UK Account and your NordVPN is logged onto a UK server - it works perfectly. Eurosport Sport and many other channels and all in HD. Yes I have a fairly good fibre line but this Sunday watched Paris-Roubaix buffer free with the usual GCN gang doing commentary - before, during and after the race. Loved it!!

All in all a fairly easy process. Dare I say: Very very easy? 🤣

What I despise about DSTV is that they force you to get the premium package in order to watch the Afrikaans channels and sports like rugby and cricket - so they seem to be targeting a certain segment of the market.

Once you get over that I feel there is some great value to be had. For R220 a month extra we can watch on 3 TV's simultaneously - without considering streaming which I also use - without limit or interference. So whilst my mom is content watching her soaps, we can choose what we watch on our side and there is a huge variety of sport (too much actually) to choose from.

Anything from rugby (International, URC, Champions Cup, Currie Cup, Varsity Cup, Supersport Schools, etc.), cricket (International tests, ODI's and T20, SA20, IPL, etc.), athletics (Diamond League, marathons, etc.), cycling (lots!), soccer (lots...) and a variety of others. There really isn't anywhere else that you have this variety so easily accessible.

We kept the "Family package".  It has all the Afrikaans channels (not that I watch it)

Sports .... you have a lot of "words" there .... not seeing any WHEEL sports on that list though ....  Lost my appetite for dstv decades ago when they dropped WRC, as in World Ralley Championship.  (okay, I am aware that they now have a wheels sport channel ...)

Frankly, I will rather be out there on my bike than sitting in front of a tv .... actually glad dstv helped me to get off the couch ..... o-damn ... did I just thank them ....

The only way dstv or any other provider can work for us, is if I can "view on demand".  I am not shifting my routine around a tv schedule.  But this is a different topic ...

precisely this... for step #8, you can also just buy them Amazon UK stuff if that's the agreement. Or get them concert tickets. Luckily, my mates still maintain an SA bank account for some reason.

what about vpn service etc.

for me, it’s R1100 every two year, so R45/month. Negligible amount.

I paid about R114 (AU$9.99) for Stans Sport in Australia to watch the Rugby World Cup last year, in HD (1080p), with very little buffering. 2 weeks free trial and 30 days at AU$9.99

How ironic that used the Supersport feed, i.e. commentary and pop up adverts (split screen).

They show all rugby as well as other sports, TV and movies. If they can offer it, surely the local monopoly can/could do the same.

I have two brothers in the UK, but I am sorted for now without having go the Discovery+ route. If I struggle with the TdF, I know there’s an another alternative.

13 Years without DSTV for me @ R800 per month saving without interest.
R124,800 in my bank.

No coming back for me.............

This is lekka. Question, did you save the 124k?

💯

July 2018 (post Tour) was when I ditched their service. It was R969/month at the time.

Current spend on streaming is R270/month (two providers), so savings is R750/month (rounded) or R54k by July this year.

Also no going back for me.

This is fair 😎

Can you watch races on Eurosport and Disc+ on demand, or can you only watch live? ie can you start watching anytime during live feed and start watching from the start like on GCN+ and RedbullTV?

Some of the " alternative"  options Ive tried now you can only watch Eurosport, but only live, like DSTV

Yup you can watch on demand. Has a scroll bar that you can drag back at any time or again click the "Live" button to jump back to live feed.

I have a streaming package from DSTV attached to a normal premium package that has one streaming package already. The bill is split 3 ways.

It isn't expensive done that way.

I get to watch The Masters, the football, F1, cricket, the cycling and a host of other sport that has no real bearing on my life but I enjoy.

It's worth the money for me and it's easy.

It also has kids TV, catch up and some cool movies.

While DSTV isn't ideal, it IS a complete package and when split how we have done it, relatively inexpensive

I'm doing up some reading on this IPTV. Looks interesting, however it looks highly illegal. Tread carefully.
