I recently purchased a 26inch, full carbon Volcan frame. There is more than enough room for a 27.5 inch wheel, however, the carbon on the drive side drop out has worn. Whenever I put pressure on the pedals, the wheel simply moves in the frame, it pulls the wheel to the left and it rubs against the chainstay (it's a QR wheel).

I have managed to temporarily fit a spacer in there, which has sorted the problem for now. I want something more permanent.

What are my options?

1. Get a carbon fibre person to build up the dropout?

2. Get some body to machine a sleeve?

3. Try and source a new triangle? I doubt I'll get one though.

4. Any other option (besides a new frame)?

Scrap option 3 sommer now

Option 1 is probably the safest but will likely cost more than you already have in the bike

Sorry I can't offer more sound advice

I honestly do not think that it will cost you an arm and a leg to get a carbon person will to repair it but come to think of it I won't go carbon again.

My advise: I would take something like a copper plumbing pipe or something similar and then hack it down the middle. I will then build it up (fix it) on both sides.

I had a similar issue many years ago.

The makeshift washer solution helped for long, and eventually I had it built up by a carbon repairer. Take the wheel with so that they can ensure the wheel sits straight and that the cassette doesn't rub.

I think it cost like 250 Zars, it's a no-brainer.

1: those volcan frames were very very beautiful. I had a friend get sponsored one when he was living with us. I helped him build the bike back in the day and had serious bike envy. But his old man actually scrapped the frame a few years ago because of the same issue(and they could get a frame from his new sponsor for a good deal)

2: Send it for carbon repairs and save a good frame

Thanks guys, I found a video on YouTube where a guy used some kind of metal putty. I am not convinced this will work. Pratley metal putty is too brittle for this.

I may give the epoxy a try. I also know of a guy that lives in my suburb that does carbon repairs (mostly automotive), I could ask him as well.

I am seriously pedantic and don't like a scratched frame. I am considering a respray too. Just a few too many nicks and scratches. But I only paid R1k with a shock. So I think it was a bargain.

Where do you live?

If in the Western Cape, I'd just take it to these people. For how little it cost me back then, having them doing it right wasn't worth the faff of trying stuff that might work.

I am in PE. There are one or two guys doing carbon work around here.

I  think a friend has the same issue with his carbon hardtail frame. He sent me this image. Would this be the same problem described above? It's difficult to see anything majorly wrong when I look at the dropouts myself.

Any recommendations for someone in Joburg that can fix it?
