Morning everyone

I guess this was bound to happen at some point- but my bike slipped and fell and the handlebars scratched the toptube. Looks like its gone through the clearcoat and paint but not through the carbon. I dont see any visible fibers but Looks like a tiny nick on the carbon ( almost like pressed rather than scratched )

Looking for some advise if this needs to be repaired or can I put some clear coat and just monitor it.

thanks all1898164_WhatsAppImage2023-01-28at09_32.52(1).jpeg.a526adbe91b98be8738d57b39df7f6b3.jpeg

Anybody with some experience in airbrushing will have that looking as good as new.

I often wonder. We pay an arm and a leg for bike insurance. Would cosmetic damage like this be covered by insurance?

It might be worth finding out and getting a professional to do the job.

Once minor repair is done, protect your frame from a repeat performance...

Going to look for a wrap or get VPS on it

Pretty sure it would be. (assuming it is associated with an incident rather than normal wear and tear)

One would probably just need to weigh up any excess payments vs cost vs any impact on policy/premiums etc.

Can’t imagine that it would ever be covered, there would simply be too many claims, I pretty much have a new scratch or chip on my bike every 2nd week, anyone that rides on rocky trails will

Couldn't be me... One of the things I love about raw aluminium is that even when it does get scratched, often you can't tell. And if it is a bad scratch, you use the scourer side of a sponge on it and it looks even better than before, because you have likely also removed some oxidization, so it is even shinier.

Yea, raw alu is pretty sick, looks nice too

But a carbon frame does feel and ride a bit nicer IMO

Dont get me wrong, I have both bikes and I enjoy both, all frame materials have its pros and cons

thanks for the response guys - I dont mind the scratch on the bike - just wanted to know if I need to worry about it and have it fixed. If not il put some Armour guard and continue as normal

Tap it with a coin or a car key or similar. If the area around the scratch makes a dull noise, take it to a carbon repair guy. But I'd guess from your pic that it's purely cosmetic.
