GROOT TRAP ACCIDENT

There was an accident on the corner of Cyclelab with the Groot trap event. +- 5 km before the finnish. Does someone know if the rider is OK . Looked like the driver didnt see the racers and one got hit.

Passed the accident scene probably within a minute of it happened. A participating cyclist was lying motionless next to the vehicle, looked like a woman when I looked back briefly. Quite disturbing, I sincerely hope she/he is OK. 

There was talk afterwards of a marshall also being involved in the accident.

Sorry to hear this, hope they are ok. Cars were barely obeying marshalls towards the finish unfortunately.

Glad to hear it was only there where there was an incident, I hope the rider was ok. My mtb ride crossed the route a few times and I thought to myself thank heaven I am just crossing and not on the road as part of the event. R104 is a death trap at the best of times in a car. And the R515 down tow's se pass is also a nightmare.

Organisers of the event must seriously look at finishing the race possible around the Graham/Boschkop section; this way the cyclist can ride back to the casino at their leisure pace and the traffic can carry as normal.

Solomon Mahlangu/Lynwood intersection and the entire Lynnwood road has too much traffic for a race to be still ongoing ...

Ja so I made the mistake of leaving my house (which is on Lynnwood Road) at around 10am yesterday morning. Thank heavens I wasn't a participant because that must have been a terrifying experience. The marshals must have tried their best, but many of them were not up to the task/well briefed. I had one shout at me and furiously wave his flag because I was in the wrong lane, but he spent 10 seconds prior to his fit looking away from the traffic in the wrong direction - how the hell am I supposed to know which lane I'm supposed to be in if I want to turn and you're not even looking at the oncoming traffic.

We as a club ride the R104 on a weekly basis.
It is not all bad.

Surely the dumbest decision ever to bring us down Lynnwood.
You have 4 lanes open on Atterbury.  Let us finish in Atterbury.

I did not participate in the event but I was on a section in Lynwood road. The organisers should have closed one lane in Lynwood from The Grove all the way to the finish. That way the cyclists have one lane and the cars have one lane. The marshals do not have any authority and motorists wont listen to them. At some of the intersections there was no traffic officers. 

 

Lynwood road should NOT be used for a race. Go up Hans Strydom and turn into Atterbury towards the finish.

I live between Rayton and Bronkhorspruit just north of the R104 in on a farm so it is the nearest tar to me. I drive it a lot hence my input.

There are a lot of animals either side of the road. I think the one development farmer has lost 3 goats this year alone hit by cars, if you lucky it is a sheep or a goat but there have been incidents with cattle as well this year. I know one farmer regularly walks 100 head across the road. There is a sinkhole in a certain section that opens up as soon as there are heavy rains, that thing kills a few tyres a year and usually in spectacular fashion. Lots of pedestrians and drivers randomly pulling over to buy stuff. Then you start with the coal trucks, tractors, taxi's and bad drivers over taking on the numerous blind rises. The other issue is that some are doing like 120kmh and others 40kmh.

But you do you, if it is within your personal risk limits then all good. I am just sharing my insight into a road.

Getting to Atterbury road, depending on the route (assume the same route), then coming back from the R25 you have either Graham Road or Garsfontein. Graham Road at the Robot intersection SM/Lynnwood/Graham can be congested with cars going NW, unless the cyclists can be diverted via Shere to join SM? Going back on SM towards Atterbury is probably the "safest" road IMO?

Atterbury road at the Atterbury Value Mart side and PnP can be a challenge with traffic on a Sunday morning after 8h30.

These club rides have a support vehicle following and consist generally of around 20+ cyclists.

like I said, you do you, if you deem it to be within your personal risk limits then there is no issue, carry on. It makes no difference to me.

A support car makes no difference, a taxi driver was killed in one of the numerous spiking incidents on that road. 

But ya, just sharing my knowledge of a road.

Also to the organisers - Litter zones are not socially acceptable, especially in agricultural areas where it can all blow into fields. Riders can put it in a pocket till they get to a dustbin.

And when you make the signs for the next event. It is cyclists not cyclers...
