Open Letter To Strava

Except that it's her job as a cycling journalist for an online publication to provide online content. The letter format was borderline satire and a follow-up to a series of "love-letters" written about bike products written by others. I'm sure bike journalists get tired of the same old "Ten best cycling destinations/gravel bikes/indoor trainers for 2024!" type of articles and would like to do something different now and then.

If it resonated for some people (seems like it did) then that was the point.

Let's be honest, we all know the guy that has to write "Chilled ride with Jeff" just to subtly emphasize to all his other strava bros that it was because Jeff was around that he rode slowly and otherwise he would have been crushing the segments like normal.

But if you can't make fun of Jeff riding like an old lady on her way to church, what type of friend are you?
And what type of Gen Z is Jeff for actually caring what his friend is saying about him?
Abuse?  Like the love letter states?
Bahahhahaha.

Most of these so called problems are manageable. Limit the number of people who follow you, make your training private and that way you can just record your training and use the data as you want. Which is probably what it was originally intended to do anyway until people decided to turn it into Instagram.

Well for most of the people I ride with I am The Jeff of the group and personally I'd be OK with guys titling their rides "*** slow because Jeff was with us" now and again.

I think this article was well-measured. It's not merely a case of 'move on if you don't like it' - it's more a case of strava herding us all down a path we never signed up for.

Strava's biggest failing was offering a stellar product from the start and packing too much in. Now the other shoe's dropped and they're scrabbling to make this a sustainable business and like all social media (calling a spade a spade here), the users end up being the product and in doing so, the aforementioned herding is taking place.

The only choice each of us has as an individual is to vote with feet and wallets. Does that mean we need to tell everyone? I guess, that's a 'yes' if I'm a journalist. Otherwise, it's probably best for me to STFU and move along

Fair post, and the oped/letter did make some good points.
Although for me personally, the overall attitude came over as projecting a bit. That's me though, I can appreciate how it might resonate more with others.

In general though there's an irony in how people seem to read for reaction rather than comprehension.

Most users argue that Strava motivates them to ride harder/more/??, keeps a record of rides and improves their overall fitness/achievements 🤔

BS I say ............................. get married and you have Strava PRO. It can cook and make your life way more enjoyable.

The reality is that most probably don't. You can do what you like ;)  .... the same way that the author doesn't have to use the app if they don't like it. No one has to read the letter if they don't like it.

avocado is nice unless it's the colour of your bibs.

It's also great on pizza, but not with pineapple.
