I surfaced with the suit and ski floating beside me 🤣 Pity there is no slow mo video of that as the view of how the suit came off would be great to see.. I do recall a mate who fell at high speed on water skis having lefty the size of a purple tennis ball and bruises from under his thighs to up his back that were a lurid purple. Nothing broken but the pain was in a whole new league. Water is very hard at high speed. Robbie Stewart 1

You just toggle between 2D slices in 3 planes vs 3D. (software guy voodoo) Obviously 2D gives better internal detail as you can see every volume pixel taken. By selecting different "levels" and "windows" you can add and subtract different tissues for some eerie 3D views. Usefull for identifying undisclosed stabs/gunshots/lacerations. MORNE and ChrisF 1 1
RobynE Posted January 10 Posted January 10 No imaging of my worst bike injury which was broken big toe doing slowest OTB ever on my own driveway (my brain said GRAB THE FRONT BRAKE FOR NO GOOD REASON and I did). Horses though - I have one of these in my lower back (2022) and two in my neck (2021) as a result of smashing my discs to smithereens over the years. Elected for surgery in my early 40s. I’m a VIP at Spine Africa 😊 Also no imaging but I currently have a fabulous calf tear because horse and I parted ways and horse stood on my leg as he galloped off. Also stood on my back right at my disc replacement site but thankfully his full weight was on my leg instead. ChrisF and Dexter-morgan 2

MORNE Posted January 12 Posted January 12 Really seems that some of these docs bolt/screw you back together like a weekend DIY’er would a rotten, wobbly piece of garden furniture with an overpowered cordless drill….”43 screws at many angles should do?” 😅. Maybe ‘houtwerk’ should also be a mandatory subject for medical students☺️ Mook 1

Maybe ‘houtwerk’ should also be a mandatory subject for medical students☺️ Lot depends on the usable good bone. My femer fracture was close to the knee. Only two screws on the short section, 4 on the other side. Does mean it is marginally weaker, and a few more days/weeks recommended for the bone to heal properly Still beat 6+ weeks in traction ... PS - motorcyle ... got taken out by a student test driving a car. '86, no pics of those X.rays
V18 Posted January 12 Author Posted January 12 About the ugly woodwork. Multiple crossing lines create stability without overcompressing the line of union. Think about trying to put a shattered apple back together with toothpicks. Sometimes they intentionally "underfixate" to encourage a little movement around the fracture lines and healing. Open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) is crazy complex and I'm always blown away behind the method in the (super uggs) madness when we meet up in during the multidisciplinary meetings. Gotta love a good orthobro. No I'm not getting paid to say this. (They are however stronger than I am. So I'll stay in my lane respectfully). MORNE 1

I can't hammer a nail in straight, he put 3 MOFO screws into my bone with utter precision through a minuscule hole in my hip .... cost a fortune but I don't begrudge a cent cos without that expertise I would be a lame old mamil hobbling about the place with a crooked gait and all sorts of pain.

Had to drive 150kms after the "Race" and then climb three flights of stairs. Took three days for medical to come to the party. Should have gone to your Doc as I walk like a crayfish now. RocknRolla Posted January 13 Posted January 13 16 Dec 2024. Bombing down the singletrack at Karkloof. Front wheel tracks off the narrow track, I'm riding on a borrowed bike and the brakes are mixed up (MX style) I think my instinct went for grabbing a hand full of "Rear" but ended up grabbing handful of front. needless to say it ended up with me doing a superman OTB landing on my right shoulder. Dislocated the shoulder, I was certain I had a broken collarbone but only severed the ligaments on my clavicle. At the time, me laying in the brambles hurt more than anything else. Got on the bike and rode the 5-odd kms to the car while still full of adrenaline. The car ride back to hilton was painful. Took a shower before going to casualties. No surgery at that stage as the specialist is recovering from carpel tunnel correction on both his wrists. I have been referred to a specialist in Pta, which I will see shortly. In the meantime, it looks like I have half a golfball under my skin on my shoulder... Cant access the CT and MRI, as they are on cd's and who still rocks a cd drive in 2025? Dexter-morgan 1
RocknRolla Posted January 13 Posted January 13 Couple of years ago, snapped the fork on my bike, ended up getting my lips and ear stitched back together by a very poor plastic surgeon (still look the same as before the accident...) (I will not share the gore of that accident here - But my wife who rode with me, still has trauma from this experience) Fractured scaphoid at the same time, took the better part of 8 weeks to heal. MORNE 1
Mamil Posted January 13 Posted January 13 My hip surgery was in Knysna and when I followed up with the ortho back here in CT he told me that he does better out of MTB riders than he does out of cars, rugby and motorbikes combined. It may have been hyperbole but if you ride a bike, chances are you're going to be told, "Surgery then 6 to 8 weeks and do your physio exercises".
