so a team cant juts hire someone - this isnt road cycling - they dont race/enter as teams? this sports gets more bizarre each year.

No since they are not on a team. They have no contract that has to be cleared by the UCI. They pay for their season registration, purchase their license and go race. There is also the matter of entry fees which are not cheap. Hence when you have eg. r50k in crowd funding its nowhere near enough to cover just the admin for the season ahead.

Nope. can only sign within the transfer window. This was introduced when a certain high budget team went on a rider shopping spree mid season and bought riders with loads of UCI points so they could get a World Tour License

Very cool. 

Is it a long term contract or a once off for this weekend? The press release from Mondraker just says he is joining them as a special guest for the weekend. Very much hoping it is a long term thing.
