Can anyone assist me (or a referral) with the respray of a road bicycle frame in the Western Cape area?

I recently received a quote for R8500 just for a  respray and an extra R2500 to strip and assemble if required. Is the the general going rate? There was no funny designs or any repairs etc, just a M/L frame in a matt black with a slight shimmer.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

The best two painters in the WC are James and Jared and you'll pay a premium price through both of them because they are charging market related labour rates as they have premise & staff overheads to cover. Their work is of a high standard and they also paint for some of the brand names i.e. Cabal, Mercer etc.

Your best bet would be to find a garage painter who doesn't have the high overheads to cover. I paint as well but only focus on vintage steel frames as I don't have the time or inclination to spend a full day sanding down a carbon frame for primer. It's a massively time consuming process and a dual suspension mtb is obviously worse than a road bike.
People grossly underestimate the time it takes to strip, paint and rebuild a bike to a high quality. There's a number of labour intensive steps in that process. I know because I was one of those who only realized it once I started doing it myself.

You can try Wayne Luyt, he might be able to assist. L8_bikes on Instagram

Hi. I just had a frame respayed by a guy in Surrey Estate, Athlone. you can contact him. You will have to strip the bike yourself though.

These days it is sad how little people believe other service providers should change (Plumbers electricians etc.)

1. How long do you think it will take to do
2. What tools and consumables will be needed
3. What experience costs
4. What materials are needed
5. What rent and manpower costs.

Based on R 8,500.00 (Vat in or out) I suspect they will make about 750 to R 1k Profit. Also it is a niche service.

I think I am paying about R 3.5k just to have a dropout fixed (yes they don't normally do this). Such a small bit of work, but attention to detail required is vast.

Perspective matters, especially considering replacement cost and the average joe's salary / requirements

The local bike shops, Norhtern suburbs, all pointed me to Carbon Bicycle Repair Durbanville.

VERY HAPPY with their work.

PS - I have heard good feedback about Jared as well - after CBR did our project.

PPS - another project later this year, will also go to CBR..... first need to find a specialist aluminium welder (once my budget recovers from the current cycling expenses) ....

Whatever happened to Bogus?

Also wondering this. He used to be the default/go-to guy, along with Jared.

Agree with you @ChrisF

I have used CBR on a number of occasions, and super impressed every time 👌

As @BuffsVintageBikes mentioned - few people truly grasp the amount of elbow grease required to prep and detail a carbon frame when being repaired/resprayed.
