In Searle Street (The Boulevard) Thanks for the offer. Very kind.

our closest regular commuter words at the Woodstock exchange.... So close to you

They managed to mobilize about a million police and police vehicles for SONA last week.  So I don't think that the City will be able to use a 'lack of resources or personnel' as an excuse anymore.

I was always told to avoid confrontation, so I cycle on the N1. Not risking it from Dormac To town onbicycle route. I do find that the guys also cycle from Milnerton market on the right-side facing on coming traffic and cyclist coming frm town.

I almost had a head on collision with a cyclist coming from town twrds Milnerton. A truck was parked in yellow lane, as they do, so I pass the truck as per normal, and from no where obscured an oncoming cyclist appeared from the front, I almost connected him...and then he still turns around and swears at me, like I was wrong.

Anyway no to the bicycle lane as from me, sometimes the theory isnt practical as they didn't take into account 3rd parties(perps)

I will risk my life on the Highway, the cops aint going to pull you over, the only time you see them on that road is them setting up a speed camera.

That's their way of missing confrontation...

Stay safe guys

They are there today ... they litterally brought their camping chairs !!  Parked out in the sun, with one "near" the camera, rest just relaxed and enjoying the sun ....

I have zero issue with them trying to catch speeding cars ... if you see the regular evidence of shattered car parts and leveled light and lamp posts you would realise that this is a very dangerous section of road with a big contributing factor being speeding.

Jip.  I drive there regularly, and have had close encounters with the Fast and Furious racing slalom through us normal oaks ....

But surely one vehicle and one camera operator is enough .... okay, obviously we dont know if they had a training day and have any reason for three cars and about 6 people.  As they are on the other side of the fence it is not as if they can give chase .....

We were actually talking about it in the car today.  Would be very nice if we had more cop cars driving about and addressing issues away from the known camera spots .... (while keeping those camera spots going) .... now imagine 5 off those cops were patrolling the roads and and cycling lanes during the actual commute time ....

PPA facebook page 23 July 2019

The Pedal Power Association (PPA), has provided input and information to the City Of Cape Town and the South African Police Services (SAPS), to implement a strategy to make to West Coast cycle path safer for all cyclists.

As useful as it has been for cyclists, the West Coast cycle path route in and out of the city has also been a dangerous one – since 2017, 15 cases of cyclists being robbed have been reported to the PPA. However, given that not all cases get reported to us or police authorities, the actual number of incidents is much higher. SAPS, in conjunction with City Of Cape Town, has assessed that it is a criminal element among vagrants living along certain areas along the path that are the biggest threat.

In a recent meeting chaired by Pieter Robberts, Director Policing and Law Enforcement for the City of Cape Town that included the PPA and other role players, the criminal activities on the cycle path was specifically discussed and the following plan of action agreed upon.

REGULAR PATROLS
The area worst affected by the criminal activity is from Woodstock to the Paarden Island My Citi bus stop. This will now be patrolled by a Law Enforcement Unit employing two motorbikes, Segway’s, bicycles and foot patrols.

The PPA is willing to donate #bike4All bicycles for these patrols over peak times from 6h00 to 9h00, and then again from 15h30 to 19h00, as well as Sundays when the path has the most traffic. There is also a need for volunteers to do patrols over weekends.

MONITORING AND ANALYSIS
Along with a clear and increased law enforcement presence, there will also be 24-hour CCTV monitoring of the area. City law enforcement will also conduct a weekly analysis of activity on the cycle path. They are also looking for volunteers to monitor the cameras in the traffic management centre.

CYCLISTS – CALL TO ACTION
For the plan to work requires assistance from Cape Town’s cycling community too.

• Report cases: The PPA and SAPS are calling on cyclists to report the cases to the Maitland or Milnerton Police Stations. Building a clear picture of the criminal activity is an important element of effective policing. Given the CCV footage that can quickly be retrieved, the chances of apprehending criminals and making a strong case against them is dramatically increased.

The PPA is asking cyclists who have been attacked in the area from 2017 up to now to please contact liz@pedalpower.org.za with your case number and details in order to investigate possible prosecution.

• Volunteer for patrols: SAPS is asking for volunteers to join the Auxiliary Services that will patrol the area over weekends to ensure the path is safe

The PPA will host a co-ordination meeting, inviting all the role players and cyclists who regularly use the cycle path. The aim will be to discuss issues and give input to further improve this action plan.

thanks for the info. Very encouraging indeed. Think I will start using that stretch again.

So yesterday I used the cycle lane stretch from Woodbridge Island to Woodstock, past the notorious stretch under the Woodstock Bridge,

I left early in the the morning at around 6am, and it was obviously still dark, not to mention rather cold!

I noticed 2 metro police vehicles stationed at the BRT lane in Milnerton, with another at the part where the cycle lane heads off Marine Drive and into Paarden Island.

I noticed a vehicle patrolling this section too.

At the stretch where you head under the N1 there were another 2 metro vehicles stationed, and noticed one patrolling the stretch between this and the Woodstock Bridge.

All in I observed 7 metro police vehicles on my stretch from Milnerton to Woodstock. I was very impressed and this definitely made me feel more confident in using this route.

On my afternoon commute I noticed a metro police vehicle stationed at the woodstock station, close to where all the muggings have taken place.

Well done metro police for your much improved presence! I will be back to using this route for my commute.

Interestingly, I did not encounter a single other cyclist, neither in the morning , nor the afternoon.

Where is everybody??

the problem is probably the same way i feel atm. the damage has been done.

I'll start using it when i see there is consistent policing. i know it goes both ways though...if i dont use it they'll stop patrolling....but they have been inconsistent with there patrols according to this and many other sources. as luck would have it...the one day i feel fine using it...is the day they decide it wasn't necessary anymore an I get mugged.
